Update on Plum
So plum still had fin rot. I've been treating him for probably more than a month now on different meds. Right now he is on Furan-2 and Rid fungus. His tail was starting to look better yesterday, but it looks worse today. I hate this. Poor little guy.

Poor little guy. I'm going to just throw a few things out there....
How're the water parameters? Water temperature?
Are you using carbon?
Have you added a few drops of garlic to his water to help boost his immune system?

If he has been on meds for a month it is time to take him off them......Just keep his water super clean and add garlic guard/vita chem/ and fish protector....Fish build up a resistance to antibiotics....He really doesn't look that bad to me right now...He just needs time to re-grow his finnage....

awww poor lil man...let me show you something...my rafikki was totally finless from a long story short, jumping out of his bowl, floundering across the kitchen floor, covered in dog hair and being licked by my puppy!! I mean he was black and gray and didnt move...took me almost 2 months of daily water changes, fresh garlic and garlic juice, stress coat, and fish protector...but hes totally recovered...it was so hard watching him day after day ..but patience prevailed...so dont give up on him...try using some more natural things and maybe stop the meds for awile...I seriously never thought my boy would live.....I wish you well and ill say an extra betta prayer for you!!!!

Awww this is great. I just spent all of my money on furan-2. I guess i'll try to gathr up some money I have lying around. Could i just soak pieces of garlic in his tank? I did get the 100 mL bottle of Aquasafe for only 4 dollars so I guess that's good. Do you see how his colors have changed? Could that be stress?

lol, If you put pieces of garlic in his tank, he'll probably eat them. So make sure they're tiny bits, like the size of the betta pellets.
It could be stress contributing to the problem. I'd advise using Stress Coat with Aloe, it'll help soothe him and helps with fin re growth.

My bottle of aquasafe doesn't say anything about the aloe, but it does say something about a bioextract and it says it helps their slime coat. What do you think? Shawnie that story is so uplifting.

Stress Coat has aloe, I don't know about Aqua Safe. Stress Coat will also help with damaged fins, the slime coat as well as remove chlorine and other toxins from the water.

If you can find Fish Protector (I order it online), that is tops for what you'd want for your little guy. It's amazing stuff and very helpful with fin rot.

Isn't API Stress Coat almost as good as Fish Protector and pretty much the same idea? It's much more readily available, and I'm thinking it might be faster and less expensive for Red Wag Platy to pick up some Stress Coat rather than wait for/pay for shipping Fish Protector. I bought a small bottle recently for around $5 at Petco.
Isn't this the "magic trio" for healing torn fins?
- Fish Protector (or substitute Stress Coat)
- Garlic Guard (or substitute your own homemade garlic juice or bought from a grocery store)
- Vita-chem (available in some local and chain pet stores)
Of course, you'll need to go back to treating Plum with heavy-duty meds if he develops fin rot. Hopefully he'll start healing up just fine with the three more gentle additives.
- Aquasafe. I don't know much about Aquasafe but AFAIK it is a water conditioner that you'd generally add to tap water before introducing the new water to your tank. It's probably fine and claims to help your fishes' slime coat, eliminate chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals. But it serves a different purpose from Fish Protector, Garlic Guard and Vita-chem.
In the case of Garlic Guard and Vita-chem, you can soak the food in it. Dave recommends one to two drops per gallon of each per day dropped directly into the tank, plus Fish Protector, when treating for torn fins, as I recall.
Shawnie can tell you more from her direct experience with Rafikki, who magically revived with the "trio." (I, too, am a huge fan of the little survivor and his story, Shawnie!)
