Betta Tail Fin

I have a question on a Betta's tail. Is it supposed to split in places sometimes or is it supposed to be solid form? I noticed on my two males every now and then one or the others tail is split in places. As of right now the blue male is solid and the 4th of July male is split in three places. Oh, almost forgot to say it sometimes split on the fin below him, too. I noticed on the web about fin rot. Is this what I am seeing or what does fin rot look like. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
Oh, also forgot to mention they are veil tail types, also pics.

If you go to my profile you can see the different tail types on Betta boys.....If you can, post a photo and I can tell you if it is finrot or something else.....

What kind of plants and decorations do you have in with him?
Plastic plants tend to rip flowing fins as do sharp insides of a castle or something. I have been inspecting my Betta stuff and using sand paper on the sharp openings. These constant tears will give him a bacterial infection and cause fin rot.

I'm not an expert, but it doesn't look like fin rot to me. He could be getting snagged. The plant shown in the pic looks like it could do some damage.
Like Allie said, take a look at the plants and decorations. You could take some panty hose and run it along them, if it snags the hose, it can rip your bettas fins.

Keep his water clean and add a couple of drops of garlic juice to his water to help his immune system and maybe some Stress Coat.

He should heal up. Others will be along with more advice.

He's a beautiful boy. I love the coloring.

Thanks, I was wondering that too about the plant. I will remove it and do something else. I am still waiting to get a chance to put them in a larger tank and then I will do better with plants for them. Example silk plants or a real one, which I will do research on.

Those splits can usually heal up pretty quick, but if you have fish protector, vita-chem or garlic guard any of those are helpful to speed the process.

I agree with Lucy on that plastic plant, get it out and replace with something else. Veil tailed Betta's will snag thier fins on everything. Any decoration has to be inspeceted for every little sharp corner or excess plastic from the molding process and so on.

Consider a small bunch of live plant, it will help maintain water quality as well as give the Betta a feeling of security. If you do go live with the plants, find a plant that does good in low to medium light unless you have a lighted hood.

And COBettaCouple has it right on the head with keeping a healing supliment available.

Great advice everyone has given here. I had a couple of issues with my veil tail boy, and i didn't know whether he was biting himself or if he had gotten his tail caught in a fake plant. just to be on the safe side, i decided to plant the tank with low light, real plants, since my bulb allowed me to and he loves it. However, a lot of members here have very good results with the soft silk plants too. Good luck!
