New addition: Popsicle/close call with “rule of thumb”

Here’s Popsicle! Notice the castle he’s cruising by in the second pic. See that tiny window almost hidden behind his tail? Well, last night I couldn’t find Popsicle. After a tank search, I noticed his back half sticking out that window, not moving. I freaked out, and got my hand in the tank to tap on the castle. If he had been any bigger, or if there hadn’t been a back door in that section; he would have been stuck. As it was, he had a bit of a wiggle to get out. I took the castle out IMMEDIATELY and gave him a clear glass mug to “hide” in. He’s not happy with me - he loves the cave on the right side of the castle. I really want to put the castle back in - the whole family likes it; but what do I do about the windows? I seriously thought they were small enough to NOT worry about. Is there any way I can block them so he can’t use them anymore?

I also want to say that I love this forum! I’ve learned so much by lurking and reading…I’d post more, but I have the worst dial-up connection in the universe! With that in mind, I will thank everyone in advance for any tips ya’ll have; and I will do my best to get the connection to cooperate long enough for me to respond.

You could take GE II 100% clear silicone and silicone something over the window. If you do that you should make sure to have the castle away from the tank and let it sit for 24-48 hours to "cure".

He won't hide in forever. I have one in with my betta...they always hide in it when they aren't swimming back & forth.

Welcome Popsicle! I love his colors.

It must have taken a while to post his pic with dial-up, so thanks for taking the time. He sure is handsome.
He looks so sad it that little cup, but he's really enjoying his tank.

You can try taking a piece of filter floss and just stick it in the window.

eek! Poor Popsicle! I'd take a stone of the right size out of Phred's tank and silicone it into the problem window(s). I will pick some up (silicone, that is!) and we'll take care of it this weekend...tell Popsicle to be patient! Auntie Kelly to the rescue!!!

i can understand why he's not happy, mine don't like the clear glasses either in their tanks they prefer more of the cave type things and the hamster tubes.

hope you can get his castle fixed

You could cut a window out of the plastic of his "cup" and silicone it in place. I also think you could silicone a mesh ( like from an old net )in the window to make a screen ...good luck what ever you decide.

The best way would be to find a castle which has windows that poor little Popsicle cannot get caught in. They really love having windows to play in and out of and to have the window blocked will frustrate him and make him angry I am afraid.

Walmart has wonderful wide windowed things that have many windows for them to play in and out of and they are priced right.

Welcome to Fishlore and congrats on a handsome little Betta boy. I agree with Rose and would look for a cave or cave-like decor with smooth holes that you can easily put your thumb into and easily pull back out. Plastic hamster toys (including the tubes) are often a great source of Betta toys, they're just the right size for a Betta.

Thank you all for such good suggestions! I really thought those windows were too small to worry about. I was obviously wrong! I'm not sure what I'm gonna end up doing - since there are other ways to hide in that castle, maybe Popsicle won't be too mad if I close the windows? I will have to look and see what other kinds of hide-outs I can find....here's a new pic of Popsicle right after he sulked in his glass cave

dang -- he's a gorgeous boy when he puffs up, isn't he!

now that I've inherited your "killer" castle.... I've decided to stuff the towers with fiber floss and then add a coat of silicone to hold it in place. This will also block one of the problem windows. The other window will be getting a black pebble siliconed into it. I'm thinking it can go in with either Pepper or Alven....and I'll keep you posted on how they like it!
