I'm hoping that, since it just started (it literally appeared out of nowhere yesterday), I can catch it early and keep it from getting worse. I don't have garlic juice or fish protector, just vita-chem and Maracyn Plus - which claims it's good for finrot, and doesn't need to be removed from the tank with activated carbon afterwards, which is nice.

She hates garlic, and I'm on campus now, not at home, so I can't just run out to get stuff.

Sorry to hear about Kappa! I hope you can get her better soon. I think that the vitachem and Rid-Fungus really help.

I know how to add the garlic juice to her tank; I've done it before...I just don't HAVE any (or any Rid-Fungus), and can't really GET any.
Also, I was responding to the statement that eating the little pieces of garlic is good for them with the fact that she hates garlic (i.e. won't eat it and won't eat food flavored with it).

You should be fine with the Vita Chem and Maracyn Plus. Don't stress out too much. I know she'll get well soon.

I hope so. I started treating her yesterday, as soon as I noticed the damage to her fins.

If you can get to a pet store soon I would stock up on a few things for Kappa. Sometimes fin rot is a sign of internal parasites or an internal infection. The maracyn 2 would be fine for the infection. But I would try to get some anti parasite meds or food asap.
Hope she is feeling better soon.

Awwww, poor Kappa. You must be so upset especially being stuck on campus.
I hope she recovers quickly.

Any chance she's biting her own fins? I've heard of some males doing that, but I don't know about females.

I'd say you're doing just what I would too and I hope she is clear of it soon. Fortunately, the girls do seem to heal faster in general.

There is a fantastic substitute for those living in a dormitory that I found for the garlic situation but it will make the tank smelly if you use too much. Get GARLIC POWDER at the grocery store in the spice section. It is pulverized powdered garlic that is dried. Be careful not to get Garlic Salt as the betta does not need or want the salt. Just put a small pinch of the stuff (very small) in the tank and it will be more than enough to give the benefits of the garlic without having to worry about refrigeration and the container will be very small to store in a drawer or with the food supply. I used to use the stuff once in a while in a pinch to make garlic juice when I was out. Soak it in dechlored water and it makes lovely garlic juice but it does as well to just put it in the tank if you watch the amount. She will not eat it if she dislikes the taste of garlic but it will not hurt her if she does.
She could also be just having an issue with the new water supply and getting used to a new pH and parameters even though they may be all in normal limits. This will have stressed her even though it may not have been much of a change and she could just be having an issue with the getting used to a new surrounding. But Dave is very right, females will have much less problem healing as the amount of finnage involved is by far less to deal with.
Hope you are both enjoying college otherwise.
Rose
