He's probably a veil tail - as they are the most common kind sold in chain stores. He looks just like my first betta, Jules.

He's a veiltail.
They are the most common in pet stores... but no less special for it. My favourite pet of all time happens to be my own veiltail male, Mr David Bowie.

Thanks guys
Ack, I've given him the flakes and he won't take it! I must have spoiled him with the bloodworms.

Some people do have luck with flakes with their bettas but I never have. I find that their mouths don't really seem shaped right to eat them easily and while the bettas are hungry all the time they are also sometimes very picky eaters. So if he has been getting bloodworms, he may not want to try the flake food for you. I have 3 and that is about all they will eat full time and with the Daphnia and peas for treats. But then I spoil my little guys all the time so if they don't want something they don't have to eat it. They will eat Atison's Betta Pro pellets occasionally but I have been noticing they don't even eat them as well as they used to.

Hehe, well he seems to be accepting them more easily now, but he doesn't eat them as enthusiastically as the bloodworms
I know bettas aren't very good tank mates for very many fish, but I'm just wondering if I could keep my betta boy in a 10 gal with a red wag platy, a dalmatian molly, and a cherry barb. I'm guessing no...

Mollies are sometimes known for being a bit aggressive, so I'd say no.

Congrats! He's a gorgeous fish!

No to the platy, no to the molly, and a definite no to the barb.

Platies are sometimes confused with female bettas and the betta may attack them, Mollies will either attack and nip the betta or vice versa, the barb will be vicious toward the Betta.

I wouldn't recommend flakes too often. They so dry and can lead to constipation. The Betta pellets by Ocean Nutrition are our choice for a dry food, although bloodworms (frozen & thawed or dried & soaked in water or vitachem or garlic) are what we'd recommend for the main diet food.
