Getting my first betta soon....
Hey everyone, ive kept tropical fish for a long time but theres one fish ive definitly never had, a betta, and now ive decided i would like one .
I was just wondering if people could post some pics of their bettas so i can decide what colour i would like to get.
I was thinking of getting a 5-10 Gal tank, dividing it, then having a male in one side then a female in the other, leave them divided for a few months and then maybe try and let them share the tank together
I need all the advice you great betta people have to offer and any advice at all on keeping bettas will be much appreciated! .

Hey Platy Ben That sounds like a plan except keeping them together part
Breeding a pair is A LOT of work and $$$$ and very risky!
But a 10 gallon divided would be great...I have (2) 10ga tanks divided with Female/Male's check out my profile to see pic's. I tend to like the light colored one's But it's all a matter of preference I also have a red, and a blue, and a red & Blue

Platyben, you'll enjoy having a betta. You don't have to worry about looking at colors, you won't pick the betta, he/she'll pick you.
This thread has quite a few pics. Fish Lore sure has some beautiful bettas.

We have pics of ours in our tanks thread.. except the 2 newest ones and I'll post pics of those as soon as I find our camera.
http://www.fishlore.com/aquariummaga...tank-setup.htm - some basic setup advice.
If you divide a tank, go with at least the 10gal and don't let the male & female together. They'd both be miserable, injured and it wouldn't end well for one or both of them.

If you look at my profile by clicking my name you can see many different colors and types of Bettas..
Don't even think about trying to have a male and female share a tank..One of them will end up dead and probably both....

Males shouldn't ever be kept with another betta.

I went to the fish store today to look at male bettas and you were right about one picking me, i was walking along looking in the tank and suddenly a yellow-orangey guy with blue gill plates and blue on his tail rushed to the front of the tank and flared at me , i looked at him wishing i could buy him, but i dont even have the tank yet , could be waiting a little while.

When that happens, I buy the poor guy and keep him in a 2 gallon bowl until his tank is cycled. I know, it's not ideal... but I promise a 2 gallon bowl with daily water changes and the TLC they get at my house is 8927395829017480x better than the treatment they'll likely get at the pet store while waiting for me to get my act together.

A good thing about pet stores in the UK, bettas arent kept in cups
Theyre kept in the same tanks as the platys in most of the fish stores i know

In the UK Betta are treated in a 'miracle' way compared to in the US. They are kept in communitys (Why on earth are they ALWAYS in the tetras tanks? ) and the best way to pick out a good one is to see which ones swim to you - they are the ones who have beenin less time and thus less beat up.
As a general rule the UK has lots of prewtty decent pet stores and an amazing chain called Maidenhead aquatics that is the best fish sotre I have ever heard of!

Maiden head certainly is good but my nearest Maidenhead is 1 hour 30 mins away so i go to another good chain called Swallow Aquatics, the nearest one to me is 20 mins away .
