No tail issues here knock on wood!

I'm starting to wonder if crowntails are an easier type of Betta to keep....Will has never had issues with his tail except when he got chewed up by the tiger barbs and Kix and Dunn are growing like weeds.....

Has anyone else wondered about this?

I have crowntails, delta tails, and half moons and my half moons are typically the ones that are most succeptable to fin rot. I think it is because they have such full fins that they are easily snagged or torn on gravel if they drag them. The only time my crowntails have gotten finrot is recently because the half moons that they share a divided tank with also have it. I don't know if the fungus causing finrot can pass from fish to fish, but I think that in my case it probably did. I think that since the crowntails have the thinner fins, they are not torn as easily.

When the Crownies get tail issues it is very rare but much more serious as it is their rays that get the problem to begin with and not the webbing. The other types have the webbing attacked first and the webbing usually stays pretty healthy. So if you see a Crownie start to lose ray length RUN for the medicine cabinet for them. They cannot afford to wait for treatment. They also seem to be the ones who want to chew themselves more frequently. For some reason they like to chew their tails more often than the others. Naughty babies!

Yea, Mickey got fin rot and it was nearly the end of him due to a secondary columnaris infection. He bit his tail fins showing off for Chloe, but other than his own bites he's not had any trouble.
