A Betta for my store?
I've been thinking about getting a betta for my cash wrap desk at my store. I think the girls and the customers would dig it.
my dilema is this. the store is open every day from 10-6, but from 6 at nite to 10 in the morning, he would basically be by himself with no interaction.
i worry that this would be too much time alone.
i see how royal blue lights up when we are home pay attention to him.
the fish would have lots of interaction in the day, but then all evening and nite alone.
what do you think, betta lore?

If it was 6 am - 10 pm I would say go for it in a second..but..I am not sure like you say if that would be to much time alone. I think some betta would be ok with it and maybe others would pine...whatever you decide ..good luck.

As Shirley said.. some Betta's can deal with that. Like my guy Glory, Im sure he wouldnt care.. hes such a solitary guy. So you will be able to know how much your guy interacts with you in order to make that decision.
I was wondering, are you going to keep him in a filtered tank? Or are you talking about a bowl at your work station?

IMO ...being left alone at night, is better than living in that cup day/night in a petstore...I say go for it...he will probably need to rest after all the customers and you play with him all day

a small filtered tank with heater and all.
have any of you used those Bio-Orbs? they look kinda cool, but maybe a little cheesy.

The bio-orbs have a special type of heater that fits in the center arrangement somehow but to tell you the truth, bettas do not do well in bio-orbs. The current is kind of swift around the perimeter and too swift for them with their big fins and they get tossed about and also they are top dwellers and since the top surface of the bio-orb is very small they have very little room to swim and surface area to breathe. they need a clear surface to go to so they can go to it to breathe with their labyrinth organ. They are nice for a community tank with some fish but bettas ... sorry but no.
The betta needs a large top area like in a rectangular area or a shape that is wide and gives them a lot of room to go up and butt their heads on the surface. That is them taking a breath of fresh air.
A fish at the store is a good idea and they would do okay as long as they are not left alone for long periods of time like days at a time but they enjoy seeing activity and watching things going on around them so they would be very curious about the things going on around them and as long as they did not get left alone much they would not get lonely.

Thanks Rose, you're always the BEST for advice!!!
yeah, they are curious little dudes. my Royal, perks up every time we even walk through the room.
When we're open, we get pretty good traffic in the store, so he would get lots of girls to wiggle for. hee hee.
just need to find the right tank size that would fit my desk. we usually have a big flower arrangement there on the corner, but i discontinued that for a couple of months with the bad econmy, but i think a betta would be cool there!

I agree they are nice looking tanks but a betta is like a fishy sailboat. Those fins are like sails and they catch the current and the bio-orbs have a lot of current. So they would go flying and get thrown about and get hurt and that would not be good so rather than spend a lot of money to find that out and not be able to do it, it would be better to find a nice something else that would work. One of the 5 gallon tanks like Martinismommy has for her babies would not take up much more room on the desk, and would make a lovely tank for a betta and give a lot of decorating room. Some nice glass flat marbles in the bottom would give it a lot of shine and some flowers in the tank like Karen has would make a nice substitute for the flower arrangements, kind of like what Karen set up for Patron. She could maybe consult on how to help or tell you where she got the tanks.

I'm here to help....Just ask.....
I think a Betta at your store is a lovely idea! It is the perfect way to educate the general public on how to care for these amazing little fish....Most people have never even seen a betta in an aquarium....You will get lots of comments and he will get lots of attention! Go for it!

All good information. As for being left alone that long, he might enjoy the time if he gets a lot of stimulation during the day. Good luck! Your staff and patrons will enjoy a Betta.
I have a 20g tank at work and the patients and their families love it.

Might even one of those bookshelf tanks work? Depends on exactly how mich room you have but I believe they are 24 x 9 x 10 and around 6-gallons - very nice for making sure your guy has plenty of room to show off.
I use to have something very similiar to those bio-orbs. I think I was about 6 or so when the school joined with local stores to give the kids free stuff for good grades. After coming home with fish after fish my parents got a little orb that had the globe etched onto it. I doubt it had a filter let alone a heater ... but that was back down in southern Texas. The fish never lasted too long since my cats would get the lid off but it was still a neat little tank. If they could somehow many something just like that but betta safe, they'd be perfect for kids. Add a little moonlight to act as a nightlight for 'em and help 'em with their geography to boot!

Well.................I guess its time for me to chime in.........As of course I would be the one, well you know.............taking care of it except for feeding. My thought at first was one of worry............I thought he'd get a little lonely, but most nights there's really someone there until almost 7 or
7:30. Also I thought what percentage of those betta's in those little cup's actually make into a good healthy home?..........Probably not many, so my thought is why not? Jacq Spoil's every animal we have and that one would be no different. I end up at the store to pick up the security dog (Spike...He has to earn his keep some how) anyways so I like it....Shoot we toyed with the Idea of putting the 100 Community over there for a while so this would be a piece of cake.
