Am I a sexy girlie, or a handsome Plakat male?
So, we went to acehardware to get a bird feeder ....we have been seeing alot of beautiful red cardinals in our yard and wanted to set up something to keep them coming back...
Low n behold, our acehardware store has a big fish section!!! 
and I just had to go look... 
I saw this beauty and thought geez, ive never had a female and I really would love one...so after much debate with my two personalities, I got the fish...she (im hoping) is acclimating for now but after reading and looking at some pics here, im not sure shes a she LOL ...
so, is this a plakat or a very beautious fem betta?

Does your Betta have an egg tube? I can't see one in the pictures. That's the only way I can really tell short finned males from females. That and if their behavior is "maleish".

Shawnie, Take a look at Prissy's picture using the link to 'my tanks'
1 point though, from what Rose and Dave said, if it (oh I hate using that term when it comes to a betta) this will not show up until she matures a bit.
What ever it is, I love the colors...I've seen a few pics of a
plakat, and that looks similar. Of course, I am no expert.
Bird feeder, a likely excuse to get a betta.

Well IT is pretty regardless of what sex it is. You know, you could just name it something like Jamie that can go for a boy or a girl and just let it be your little mystery fishie JK. Anyways, you could see if it flares for a mirror. I don't think the females flare, but I could be wrong. |

Well oh my goodness Shawnie! He/She is just beautiful! Very exoctic looking for sure..Are they more expensive than the other type of Bettas?

In the finnage classes sticky topic there is now a post about the fins of the ladies. The above is the pic I got of the doubletail female. She sure seems like a female doubletail to me. I had a doubletail female who had fins almost identical to hers and she is the most lovely shade of green. I would give my eyeteeth for a green that color.

HAHAHAH well now...seeing how ive seen a white spot, seen her/him flare, and no sign of a pimple...what am i?? and yes rose her/his tail does split like that...hmmm I still dont have a clue..but I love him/her (still hoping its a her tho)

Hi Shawnie..
what a beautiful Double tail you have there.  That is a rare one to find in the store... seems that most I have seen have been online at Betta Breeders.
Great score! 
I have done some research, and I dont believe that it is a Plakat. The reason for this is that most Plakats have a smaller rounder Dorsal fin and it doesnt go up as high on the back as your photo. I do think that it is a female double tail tho. 
Here are two photos of double tails..one a female, and a male.
You can see that the females fin shape looks like yours.
The last two photos added are of a male and a female Plakat. You can see how short the dorsal fin are on these. Hope these photos help! |
