Not unless they have a fish tank in the office.

That's their 'egg spot' where the female would drop eggs from. It's like a white bump inbetween the ventral fins and anal fin. With male & female bettas of both short and long finnage, it's the most certain way to ID gender.

EDIT: Yea, Prissy shows a great example and she also shows the breeding efforts to increase finnage in the female Splendens.

Holly's is too. As were any females I have had. I assumed Shawnie's betta was female b/c of the short fins.

Prissy's didn't know up until a couple of weeks ago and I've had her since Feb. I thought there was something wrong with her.

Does my betta have a parasite?

My betta buddies seem to think it's a male plakat double tail.
One girl said: "I also think it's a male plakat, because of the body shape and the long ventrals. But I couldn't tell what type of plakat."
SO Dave is correct.

Ovipositor is the anatomically correct term for "egg tube" that was previously mentioned. (I guess you could say "egg tube" is more politically correct. )

To rule out that he/she doesn't have an ovipositor, you might need to look from underneath a bit. It's slightly possible it wouldn't show from a straight-on side shot, although it probably would, especially against his/her dark coloring. If it's a "she," you'd be able to see it even if the fish is pretty young.

My bet is that he/she is a "he," though. He's absolutely marvelous and such an unusual, beautiful color and I love his finnage. It's amazing you got him at a hardware store. For $2.99.
