so in my quest to find a surpreme tank build...
ok so story thus far.
the 3 bettas in each 10g tank with dividers, has been renovated. except for 2 really aggressive bettas (their being watched for now as i am afraid they may be able to knock over the art canvas barriers/dividers) i have obtained 1 more 10g tanks. so now each tank houses only 2 males, with a divider down the middle so the build is as this
12 bettas (9 male and 3 female)
2 - 3 gallon vases
1 - 5 gallon tank
4 - 10 gallon tanks
so setup is as follows.
8 males between the 4 10g tanks, with a divider down the middle of each 10 gallon. 2 females share the 5g. one male in one 3g vase, and one oddly really miffed female in the other.
anyway to the point. i shop wal-mart from time to time (really no choice at times :/ ) and they have different color light bulbs. each ten gallon has a different light. (florescent bulbs). green, blue, red and the original white. now the red and green colors have no effect on water temps, but oddly enough the blue and white light bulbs HOLD THE WATER at 77 degrees when left on for more then 3 hours. with the heaters activated, the temp holds steady at 78-79.
just thought i would post this as i keep researching tank builds, it's not the perfect substitute for a heater, but may be a low cost temporary fix till a heater can be obtained. also in case anyone asks, the next test is going to see how plants are going to thrive in these different color lights.
also two small notes, the reason this entry is here and not in my journal. I want this to be watched by mods so they will not be burdened and prove i am not just making guesses at what to do. and no worries, no bettas were not nor will not be put in harms way in any way possible. i know every Betta is different, but maybe with these builds they may like it, or it can be a decent starting point.
(EDIT) ah! almost forgot. i also picked up 2 filters that go totally under water. they are called Hydro sponge II filters (made By ATI, aquarium technology INC). they work for 5 to 20g tanks. my bettas seem to love em so far, theres a tube that connects to this that sends bubbles upwards (these things connect through an air pump) so not only are they filters, but they can be considered a amateur class air stones. whats more amusing about this filter, is that they produce way less ripples on the water and do not cause crazy currents that may stress some Betta's and most bubble nests stay in tact as long as the nest is not right above the exit point for the filters bubbles. their cheap too, only $14 (US Dollars) a piece, and the sponge can be reused for up to 6 months. only draw back is that if you have multible tanks as as, your going to need a strong air pump if your using one air pump, and a 3 way gang valve combo
post your thoughts on this folks. i wish to gain any knowledge possible in my quest to help other people.
