Super jumper

When I am feeding my girls I generally wait until they separate a little so I can feed each one specifically. This newest girl I have has decided I take to long and has started jumping for my hand. She has managed to get to my fingers as high as 5-6 inches above the water. I had no clue that they could jump this high. Now I am afraid she might accidentally jump out of the tank.

My little Casey does the exact same thing, as soon as he sees the little "spoon" thingee that came withthe pellets, he jumps. It is cute as heck, but sometimes I tell him I will feed him without him having to do tricks.

Ahh things to be happy about....

My Aries and Sebastian can jump at least 2 inches out of the water. They have freaked me out on several occasions. Not expecting a litle wet face to hit my hands/arm, lol. They will nip at me too. Little farts.
Some hop higher than others that is for sure. I make them do it for each pellet. I feed them their frozen treats with tweezers.

Yea, Bettas can really jump. It's best to not encourage them to jump much so they won't try jumping out of the tank. I'd keep the food close to the surface if you can, even if it's in your closed hand.

No, it is not something I want to encourage, although now that I have installed the Eclipse hood, it would take a real trick to get out.

Both my girls are jumpers as well. they really throw themselves at the food haha.. Sometimes I think that they are going to scratch themselves by jumping against the divider or the wall of the tank when the food is dropped. My boys dont jump at all.. they just wait for the pellets to float near them and they swim up and under the pellets. But these girls.. not sure if its just their unique personalities that are different than the males.. but boy they sure are active at feeding time!
Thank goodness you now have a hood!

Perhaps u can train them to perform tricks! Since they are great jumpers, then perhaps u can try to make them jump and get food from ur hand. but of cos make sure they land back into the water and not the floor. Lol.

The females are said to be more aggressive eaters and other than Angel, our females bettas are all very aggressive at meal times.

Despite it being 5 inches from the water surface to the rim of the Eclipse hood, during feeding Jumping Jane leap out of the water, hit me in the face, and landed on the floor. If my face hadn't been in the way, I'm sure this would have been a leap of at least a foot. I scooped her up and threw her back in, she doesn't seem to hurt. I hope she learned something from this experience.

I do not want to encourage this jumping at all, so I'm not going to try to duplicate it with a camera. At least I know she can only jump out when I am feeding since there is no way out of an eclipse hood when it is closed.

Yea, with our wild bettas, even the holes in the hood have shelf liner (the kind with holes) taped over them. They're much more likely to jump that the pet Splendens.. that's how we got our only casualties on moving here.

She is a plakat, so perhaps this explains this trait.
