Those little betta eyes looked at me and I just had to have him!
Well see, I went to Walmart. And my mom spesifically said 'NO FISH' because I am one person who those little betta eyes just kinda call to me, an I have a nice empty ten gallon for him and everything. So when I was there I just HAD to have a quick peak at the bettas and well he was there and I was there and PUFF Betta love in my heart.
I won't go into the grimy details of my moms reaction... But I got home and went to put him in the tank I had reserved for him, I kept a platy in it to keep it cycled and everything. And the platy dropped her fry early! See I was going to put her in a empty tank to do that so I could clean it easy, but she dropped in the betta tank! So now I have 23 platy fry in the tank ment for the betta! right now the betta is in a 5 gal fish bowl (it has a heater and an airpump, I would use a filter but it would create a really big current in that little tank, this was what the platy was supposed to drop in) So the platy fry are just regular platies, nothing fancy, should I put him in the 10 anyway? Should I try to get the platy fry in the bowl? What do I name him?
His body is the color of luna's avatar betta, but his fins are pale red with blue streaks in them. the poor guys fins are so torn though, he might be a crowntail with out me knowing! At the moment I'm calling him Murphy, because that was the name of the walmart person on my recept, but I dont think it really suits him.

I have no good advice but I do know exactly what its like to be struck by betta-love in the wal-mart fish aisle! LOL! I had the exact same thing happen to me on Tuesday!! Now I'm the proud owner of a white/red Betta named Pongo.
Honestly if I were you, I'd take the fry out and let your new guy have the nice, big tank all to himself. We've tried raising our platy's last batch of fry and ended up having only one survive. :-(
Best of luck with your new little love, I'm just head over heels with my Pongo. Its been SO rewarding watching him change and bloom over these past few days, literally right before my eyes. I have him on a really good feeding plan/schedule that the lovely COBettacouple recommended to me, I could post it if you'd like. Oh and POST A PIC!!! We loooooove pics!!!!!
Congratuations on your new little bundle of finny love!!

I have no idea how to snare fry. Maybe someone who's done a lot of breeding will show up and let us know.
You could put your betta in there, but you might end up losing a bunch of fry, since bettas are carnivores.

Okay here are some pics of Murphy, remember I'm still looking for new names so suggestions are welcome! Sorry for the poor quality, I'm not the greatest photographer.

He looks pretty, a lot like one I had before who was a gentle guy. He will probably have a feast day if you put him with the fry. My Walmart recently have more betta now. The thing I notice is they all must be pretty old considering their size, which means they must have spent a long time living in cups. Leads me to believe that my local Walmart must buy leftover Bettas from other sources that don't want to sell the older ones. Just a guess, but why else would they always be old, no one would intentionally hold on to them for so long before trying to sell them, would they? It is terribly tempting save them, but I have absolutely nowhere to add another tank.
It is hard sometime to get a autofocus digital camera to focus on the fish, and some will not focus at all once you get too close. You might try backing up and taking a wider view, then cropping out the part of the picture you want with a basic photo editing program.

Oh, man, I went to Wal-Mart a couple of days ago and my heart was breaking! All those gorgeous (or gorgeous if they were in a bigger bowl) bettas looked so pitiful! I'd love to get my betta a bigger tank. Now that I have read all of this stuff about what size they need. I was thinking about one that is a 1.5 gallon. That's probably all I could afford. Someday . . .
Your's is really cute. I love red bettas!

That is why I wish I got a better photo, he's not red at all! He's like a pinky purple-y with like blue flashes through his tail. Its so sad though because he looked really like dirty when I got him almost brown, and it turned out to be stress lines!!
I attempted to get the platy fry out with a net and a cup but it didnt work so I got tubing and syphened them out! The tubing was really wide, like a garden hose and I syphened them out into the 5 gal bowl, while betta waited patiently in his cup (I felt bad putting him back into the little cup, but I think he knew there was something better in store) Then I put him in the tank and he was so happy!!

Are your platy fry ok? i do hope so. Livebearers sometimes can get treated so badly and it is a shame as it is not their fault who they are and how they are born!!! Glad you have given yours a new tank.
Re names, i thought of Pat.......short for patience......he was when he waited for you to find him and was whilst waiting for the tank. Just a thought

Pat... I like it, but there is a problem Murphy is growing on me! I think that it is Murphy for good! its just that he is so quirky swimming around his tank smiling at me.
