Hi!

Pics coming as soon as I can either get my hands on the camera or my dad finds the computer-conecting lead thing for my phone.

Hi!

Quick question - do your new Bettas flare a lot a t their reflections? Mine came from a tank and act as if he's from a cup - always flaring at the reflections. Your the only person I know who's Betta's don't come from cups!

My bettas have never been in cups they come through the mail and they do not go through the flaring at themselves the way a lot of the ones do who have been kept in cups. The reason for this, I believe, is because a lot of the time the cups are kept in Dark Shelving Units and not exposed to much light. When the bettas are put in tanks and the light is on the sides of the tanks turn into a mirror like surface on the inside. They can see what they believe are other fish for the first time as when they were in the cups they basically saw nothing outside the cups unless someone took the cup and held it in the light so they could see out. The bettas that come to me are used to being in a lighted space as they are in lighted individual tanks until they are bagged and boxed to be mailed to me. That means that they are only in the dark for 2 days while in the mail and then they are READY willing and able to handle being in a lighted tank again. The only difference is the tank they are in now is much bigger.

I actually had a fish that was so accustomed to light that he was afraid of the dark and would turn color (bright red to pale white) and start to have fits when the light was turned off. Imagine my surprise when I purchased a fire engine red betta and when I took him out of the box his fins were red but his body was white. After he was in the light it took about 20 minutes for him to become red again and he was the fishy I was looking for. All of my fish were paled out when they arrived and needed to be in the light again to get their full coloration. The little guy mentioned above even ended up with his own mini DVD player to have on at night so Mommy could get some sleep without the TV on as otherwise it was leave the tank light on all night or sleep with the TV on for the light it put into the room. (or he made so much noise in the tank that I could not sleep) So he had his own 7" screen on a mini DVD so it would be his nightlight.

Yes, our bettas flare at themselves ( Jacquitaz is my mum! Her name is Jacqui and i am Michelle and my dog that sadly had to be put to sleep but i will NEVER forget was Taz.......that's the reason behind our names)

To help you get an insight into their world one night when it is dark, open the curtains and switch off the light, you will see your reflection.

Yes none of our bettas have been in cups, poor Spot was in a tank with Tetras that can be terrible fin nippers. He was hiding behind the heater for safety and everytime he came out they went for him. Heartbreaking to see. So i bought him without a second thought then shot off to a cheaper store to buy him a tank!! That was a crazy day, only went out for lunch with my parents on my day off from work.

They may not be in cups but they are still , sadly, not treated well enough. Flame and Honey (RIP) were alone in 8 gallon tanks but the rest in mixed tanks.

I'm only a kid so I have to be extra careful... My dad is a Moderator for another forum so he knows these things - just doing what I'm told.

Quite understand that you have to be careful. Even as an adult I can be very suspicious of people. Glad to hear you do as you Dad suggests it is better to be safe than sorry.

As Tazmiche has told you our Betta do flare. They flare at us sometimes when they are playing. They do the daftest things for attention. The way they behave makes them seem human sometimes and you want to give them a cuddle but obviously you cant.

Can we call you Hatch?

What Forum is your dad a moderator on? Is it a fish forum? I know Tazmiche has been on an English Forum. As explained Tazmiche is my daughter and I am called Jacqu.

Hi!

Its a kite one - I believe called 'the unofficial Pansh forum'... Pansh is a Chinese kite company who make decent kites. He's crazy about them... He goes 'kite buggying' - like a strengthened go-cart atatched to a kite whioch pulls it along! Great fun.

That's good to hear - as my new Malachai flares quite a lot! He came from a tank of tetras to - but he was in perfect condition - full colours and een swimming at the front. (Where the tetras where!) I guess this means that he is relatively peaceful. I might try keep corys or otos with him... Maybe, just maybe Nerite snails.

Just call me Hatchet... Although I don't have a nickname here it's what I get called quite a lot.

When he's not flaring, he likes to lye around in his plant bed at the back of the tank. It's semi-planted; I quite literally bought a load of plants when I got Malachai and was off - sticking in the plants just before I introduced him.

Well i would say if Malachai was swimming with the tetras that he is brave and confident. Tetras can be very mean to bettas.

Does your Dad keep fish too? The kite thing is very interesting, i'm sure many fishlore members would like to hear more. He should join.

Hi!

I might try do 3 corys and 1 nerite. I do a 33.33% water change every week, you see - and I actually enjoy doing his little tank! I don't want his personality ruined though. I'm prob going for just 1 nerite with him.

Bettas are great creatures... My kids will have at least 1 Betta each - probably about 2 at the least!

A small black and white snail. I had two of them and they became more than two. Some folks say that they need Saltwater to proliferate but this was not the case in my tank. I do not recommend them.
