| Opinions on this some males? I was cruising through aquabid and "finally" stumbled across a few males I like the look of and was wondering if I could have some opinions?
1) Blue Butterfly HM Male
2) Red HM Male
3) Multicolor BF male (seller calls Fantacy)
4) Mulitcolor HM Male
The last two boys I posted mostly because I realised that I'd gone through 7 pages of HM and only 1 and 2 had really appealed to me. 3 and 4 were the runners up what do you guys think?
P.S. I found this female and there's something about her that I don't like but I can't really put my finger on it. Any more experianced eyes pick up what it is? Copper HM Female
Note: Clicking the titles above each photo will take you to the auctions. |

| I'm not a big betta person but man, some of those are awesome. 1 and 3 are my favorites. Love that first one. |

| Thanks Slug
I like each of them for different reasons but they're mostly ranked in "order".
I'm sort of suspicious that #3 might have had some photoshop touch up but his colors are amazing anyway. |

| To my novice eyes:
I agree that number #3 has been touched up. There is a lot of exposure with the background white meaning the saturation levels were kicked up to bring out more color.
As for the female, she's nice but her rays in the anal fin don't seem very straight or strong. |

| #3 is a big no no.....Way too spikey and short dorsal spread..(not height)
#1 is nice pretty BF pattern but dorsal is too straight....
#2..I'm not a red breeder but I might have to buy him lol......
No comment on #4 and 5......Too incorrect to comment on.... |

| Thanks MM I agree for the most part
I love Male #1 b/c he has his HM spread with only a 4 ray split.
As for the red male I found him b/c I'm toying with working on an extended red line but red's typically aren't my thing. He's inspiring though
I agree that 3 and 4 aren't the winners. They weren't really my first picks...
Seems to be slim pickings on Aquabid these days... |

| Being a novice in bettas, whats wrong with spikey?
And for the record, I don't see #3 being really manipulated with photoshop. That effect can easily be achieved with just a bright flashed aimed right. The white on the fish is not overexposed as much nor is the carpet in the foreground. |

| 1 & 2 are Gorgeous,
3 is pretty but probably not the best breeder
4 doesn't grab me
and the girl I like her colour but that's just me. |

| I'm not a breeder, but I'd get them all and breed #2. The others would make beautiful pets |

| I love the red boy. One has a gorgeous clean butterfly pattern, but is it just me, or does he look a bit shovel-headed? From what I understand, that is difficult to breed out. And the dorsal/anal look a bit wonky to me.
And the female--her scaling is just not good. Possibly carrying rosetail, huh. I don't like the shape of the fins either. The color is beautiful though. Last edited by Etcetera; February 24th, 2010 at 04:58 PM.

| Hmm another male to add to the pile of what do you thinks. http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/aucti...shm&1267171492
He's a Green Full mask OHM butterfly. Sad that on all of aquabid he was the only one that "popped" for me.
And, since I'm really trying to learn how to judge females what are the opinions on this one? http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/aucti...shm&1267198111
P.S. Sorry for the lack of immediate pictures but I'm on the mac PC's at school and can't figure out how the darn things work. Last edited by Red1313; February 25th, 2010 at 07:11 PM.

| She's decent....Here is what I consider nice blue marble female.... |

| Hmmm...
The female you posted has a better Anal fin (smoother) and a better pattern. She seems to have a thicker body towards the caudal as well...
Is there any form things I'm missing there? |

| Good eye Red!....That is the sib female that just came in with my BF male.....You know if I bought her she has to be nice and correct...
I don't like the topline on the Aquabid girl..I like a straighter topline like the girl I posted..The aquabid girl rounds off by the end of the dorsal...
I'm a knit picky breeder though....We all have our own idea of what is appealing to the eye.... |

| Ah I see that now that you point it out. Could the angle of the picture have an effect on that as well?
I'm picky too just about different things lol
Like in the first group of males I started the thread with I have a preference for the blue one over the red because the blue male has less ray splitting. Though the red is the better fish over all. (A bit less splitting and I'd have bit on him, still might, maybe...) However now that I think about it could it be because the Red males fins are longer? |

| | Fish Master
| No it is not the angle of the photo.....
And YES it is because the blue is a definate PK geno male..... |

| Ok the more i look at it the more I see it. I shall bow to your greater knowledge.
Pk geno... I thought the PK was a recessive pheno-type. So you're saying he's a HMPK or a PK carrier? |
| |

|
| | Fish Master
| He is a HMPK.........At least he looks like it in that photo.... |
| |

|
| | Fish Master
| Hmmm... That would explain a lot. He was def in the wrong category then.
Any idea's why the pickings are so slim on AB right now? |

| Because shipping comes to a dead stand still in the winter.....Wait until late March and you'll find a lot of nice fish listed...
It is not unusual to find a HMPK in the HM section.....Who was the breeder on that fish? |

| Ok let's try this male. Yellow Butterfly
His top-line isn't perfect and the pattern is good but not 100% there yet.
His dorsal isn't quite right as well. But what do eyes other then mine pick out? |
| |

| He has a bleeding butterfly pattern which I hate...He's veiny through the body.....O forget it I'm not doing this anymore lol Oh wait, he has a crumby dorsal.....Actually, his topline is OK....I'd like to see a little more kicking up of his rear....Kind of like this..
This is a very young male but this is the form I like... |

| It's hard to say the negative but no one ever learns if no-one says. The whole emperor's new clothes thing.
Ok so...
The "Kick" I thought that was something that came with carding and training?
What do you mean by veiny? I agree the body needs more Yellow and less flesh color but I don't think that's what you mean.
And Crumbly Dorsal... the spikey sort of rise from head to tail? |
