Pre-Breeding Legwork...

So I'm doing the legwork now in the hopes of having everything ready to try a spawn out in May so I thought I'd ask those of you here who've spawned about a few issues.

1) Jarring. What sort of containers do you use? Glass vs Plastic? Right now I'm snooping around http://www.containerandpackaging.com/index.html and I've found a few promising options but beyond cost and ease of access (fit my hand in) I'm not really sure what else matters.

2) Heating. How do you keep the jarred betta's at the right temperature?

These are the two questions of the day so any answers or input of any kind is greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance everyone

Red, I use 4X4 beanie boxes for the males and 32 oz deli cups for the females..Water changes every other day.....

I heat my jars by Southern Calif gas co! lol I keep the house at 78......

Did you buys some breeding stock?

Thanks MM I'm unfortunately not going to be controlling the thermostat ate my new place so I'll have to think of a different solution lol.

Hmm... right now the containers I'm eyeing are:
1 - 3000cc Bottle- not a bad price.
2 - 1 Gallon HDPE Natural Dairy - Better price but would require some creative work with sissors -

I'm looking around at some stock but other then that RT male no breeding stock as yet. Not really great shipping weather around here so I have a bit of time. I was on bettas4all and got the idea that I could try outcrossing the RT male to a VT line and seeing how that works. The boy isn't show quality now anyway but with a bit of work it could be an interesting project line. However I haven't got him yet so it all hinges on what sort of potential he has once I actually have him. However I'd def like to have a real "working line" as well so I could have some decent show lines. However atm there isn't a single IBC show in Canada yet lol.

The milk cartons won't work as they are not clear.....You can always use the 1 gallon shoe boxes with lids...They are fairly cheap and clear....You don't want to have to cut anything because it creates sharp edges....I know some people who use the largest soda bottles and cut the top off.....Cheap especially if you are a soda drinker!

As far as heating you can look into seeding matts or reptile matts...

I was looking at these to they're pricier and shipping would be more simply b/c glass is heavier but the size is a bit more practicle.

Hmmm... Would something like this or this work better?

I'll keep the heat mats in mind I was thinking of picking up some sort of plastic cabinet with doors and trying to heat the unit... kind of like this but the one I was looking at was cheaper..

I use 1/2 gallon cups from here... https://superiorenterprise.com/store/

I keep my cups warm with a combination of room heat and a heating lamp.. the lamp isnt right on them, it is on the shelf below shining up.

Thanks Whisper

Hey guys question number 3 is here now. I know there isn't a set answer for this but how many jars would you recommend having initially?

Here is the page that the jars are on that I use.
http://www.containerandpackaging.com/item.asp?item=B102

Also there really isn't any way to keep them warm other then what MM said about keeping the house warm. Sometimes I find that the water in the jars seems a little on the cool side so I just add a little treated warm water to them.

Whisper how do you like the 32oz containers?
I just found these and I really like them, their price and shipping but they're smaller then I'd like ideally: http://www.uline.ca/Product/Detail/S...Jars-Bulk-Pack

Yes I have those also. Infact I have some 2 month olds in them right now. I had to seperate them already because they where starting to fight in there grow out tank.LOL So that size is good for little babies but for the bigger size after the grow out tank I like to jar them up in the 48oz. jars. or they also have a 62oz. size. Also I like the square shape of the ones I sent you the link to. Must all be in my head but I feel they have more room in them. Also they aren't just swimmimg in circles.

Makes sense lol. This place only has these round ones up to 32 oz. But I'll keep my eyes peeled for some other deals.

Haven't seen those Thanks

I kind of like the screw lids because while they cost more they provide a few more options in terms of "storing" I could screw the lids to a 2x4 attach the containers then set up a heater of some sort below.

However I have to say that those cups are probably a cheaper alternative...

Lol Ninja'd by MM on that one

Hmm... Those are promising two...

The problem I'm having is that there's a chance I could pick up a pair of Giant PK's from a breeder in Calgary and I don't know if either of those cup containers would work. But they are a great deal...

Giants or money saved... giants or $$ for better stock... hmmm

Where does one find the Beanie Boxes online? I'd love to buy 3-5 of them for stand by containers. I live in the middle of no where so online would be my only option. Thanks!

Check wholesalecases.com. I think they're 2.50 for 5 or 34.95 for 24.
