I want to have a go at breeding bettas!

I think that by the time 2011 rolls around, I'll be both physically and mentally capable of the challenge of breeding betta Splendens. I have decided to take the whole summer of 2011 off, not go on vacation, and acquire a couple more fish tanks and a couple hundred jars from now till then.

Just want to hear how some of you betta breeders out there do it. Would 2 months be enough time? How many offspring should I expect? What is the best beginner breeder (re: fin type)? Or just tell me your whole experience so I can talk myself out of it if need be

well it certainly isn't an undertaking for the faint of heart!!!! i'm not sure if 2 months is enough time, i'm pretty sure karen (MM) gives most of her babies until 3.5 months to sell them

in case you haven't seen it, here's MM's guide for breeding

Woah... Didn't even get to the materials list and I'm not ready. Maybe when I get a little older, and more financially stable, I'll have my plans set up and once I get settled in I'll see what I can do. In the mean time, I better stick with my guppies and platies for now.

Oh, and are aquabid bettas best off purchased if you intend to breed them, or would it do any good to just keep them as a typical household pet. They look too nice to go about life living a normal betta life.

TF......I just now found this thread....I've always felt if you are going to do something do it right...Starting with the best you can get your hands on just makes sense...Then your goal is to keep the BEST..If there is nothing better than the father don't keep it..

My step by step guide will walk you through the set up and spawning process....As far as when to start selling I feel that 3.5 months is good but 4 months is even better....By 4 months you can really see the quaulity you have and know how to price the fish....

Let me know if I can answer anymore questions and good luck!

Thank you MM! I can assure you you're the one I will come running to should any questions arise

Also, what are the recommendations for breeding in regards to color and tail types? Can you just toss in for example a red male crowntail and a blue mustard gas male halfmoon, or does it have to be some special combination

When I do a breeding I carefully consider the outcome.....I try and breed siblings that will compliment each other...I would never breed a red to ANY color other than red because all it will produce is red wash on the fry.....

My favorite breedings to do are halfmoon to halfmoon.....Then you know what you are going to get....If you cross a CT to a HM you should get halfsuns but it is not a guarantee.....

So siblings are best to breed together? And it's best to get some whose colors will compliment each other [best no red], its best to breed the same tail type, only get the highest quality availble (i.e. Aquabid) and stock up on time and cash.
