Breeding tank heating question Just wondering if anyone uses a marineland stealth heater in their breeding tanks?? I just purchased my second one (I have one in my 55 gallon) and I have it in a ten gallon, its 25 watts and it not heating the water at all. Is the wattage too low? Water too low?? It completely under water but there is only the normal four inches for breeding in there. All you have to do is put it in water and plug it in correct?? Theres nothing wrong with the plug because I tried to switch things around and it made no difference. Soo I think it might be broken. Any ideas??

| I think the wattage is too low. In 2 10g's I have 50W and 1 10g at 75W.
I also use 50W's in my 5's
Edit: I had problems with my first visi-therm (user problems lol)
I don't know what I did wrong but I unplugged it, took it out of the water, set the temp, put it back in the water, plugged it in and it was fine. Last edited by Lucy; February 15th, 2009 at 11:50 AM.

I agree with Lucy. I think it's just that wattage is too low.

I got a 25 watt because there is only like 2.5 to 3 gallons of water in the tank total because the water level is lowered. I didnt want to get the 50 watt because i thought it would be too much for that little amount of water

MMs breeding sticky says to use a 25 watt heater so thats also why I decided to go with it. but even a 25 watt would be able to heat the tank a little right?? The temp dropped 2 degrees over night to about 70 at best

well, it didnt work. I will probably be bringing it back tomorrow or the next day and getting a new one, I will also probably see if I can pay the difference to get a 50 watt. Its quite frustrating though!!

they do I just hope that I can just get petco to replace it and not have to ship it off to they because that would take wwaaayyyy too long and I would have to buy a new one for in the mean time

lol, i have a cheapo wal mart heater and it is literally the most consistent heater i've ever had, it's non-adjustable but it is always at exactly 78, never wavers one bit *shrug*

yeah i think i have the same one!! its useless for breeding tho!! as are the rest they have there because they are all preset and the LFS i like to get my stuff at is constantly out of heaters that arent that great to begin with so i ventured half an hour away to the petco devil only to get home with a heater that doesnt work and the marineland site is no help because they dont have a faq for heaters! figures.

I use 25watts in all my breeding/fry tanks, and they always keep the temp at 80 degrees perfectly.

okay official last ditch effort for the heater. I unplugged it, took it out of the water, and turned the heat up to 84* figuring if it is a problem of wattage that an increase in temp should increase the water temp maybe not to what it says it will but in general. my thinking being if the heater say 80* and the tank is 70* than if the heater says 84* the tank should increase to 74* maybe... or maybe it is just broken.

So I went to petco today to return my heater and get a new 50 watt, figured I might as well bump up now, and when I was there a woman was also returning a 25 watt marineland stealth so maybe they got a bad batch but anyways buyer beware lol i'll know in a couple of hours if the heater is working or not!

| I use a 25W heater in all my 10g fry/breeding tanks.
I find for the first 24 hours before i add any fish to let it run with something moving the water around. Otherwise with no water movement the heater will heat the water around it but the water further away from the heater won't get warmed!
I only have a 75W heater in my 125g tank and it keeps things at 80F just fine.
I am sorry i did not see this post sooner to try and save you money!
