Snails...

Which snails are good and which are bad to have in with betta fry?

I have MTS and ramshorn snails are these ok for eating up excess food or will they eat the fry/eggs as well? Should i get some apple/mystery snails?

Thanks

Anna

I'm not a breeder, but snails produce a LOT of waste. Not good for the pristine conditions needed by betta fry.

I use 1 medium mystery snail in my fry tank.....I don't add the snail until the fry are free swimming and eating though...

Thanks MM.

I was not sure which snails are good for the excess food, and believe me im over feeding them - only to make sure they are getting enough. That with 2x a day water changes and sucking up left over food.

MM is the Queen, or at least the Princess of betta breeding. Not sure who wears the crown here, MM or Pandora. I read that snails should not be put into fry tanks from a seemingly very credible breeder, so hence my response. I stand corrected by very successful breeder MM.

Oh Pam.....I'm not the Queen or Princess lol.....I just have a LOT of Bettas is all........The reason I use snails in my fry tanks is because it is very important to feed young fry really good and often....Because it is hard to judge what the proper amount is it is necessary to keep a snail to eat up all the left overs....uneatenrotting food is much more deadly to fragile fry than a snails poop..The poo poo actually acts as a fertilizer for the live plants...I do however syphon out the poo poo daily to keep the tank clean.....My fry actually love the snail being in there..They act like he is the metro rail to their next meal lol.....They ride around on his back...

Check this shot out!

Love those snail shots MM!

I enjoy my snails very much - and to think that I spent most of my childhood with a "snail stick" in hand waiting to crush any offending garden invertebrates! The aquatic snails really do move SO much faster than their land bound cousins, the little squirt and I sit at the fish tank and watch the snails "race".

The betta's don't seem to mind their presence in the least, and vice versa. They do a GREAT job of keeping the tank glass clear and beautiful without any algae scrubbing from me. So thankful for that!

Good to know that I can keep one with the fry, if we ever end up with any!

Cute shot MM.

Out of curoisity what type of camera do you have and lens?

I have a canon rebel and a kit lens, im saving up for a 1:1 macro lens.

Should have fry hatching in the next 24 hours so i will add "fanny" my mystery snail in a few days. I also have a batch thats 3 days old but i think the MTS snails may have got to them as i cant see any. How can snails hide in moss even after a bleach bath for the moss?

A "bleach bath"? Explain what you mean please....

I have a Panasonic Lumix DCM TZ4 camera...It works great for macro shots....Who are the parents of your spawns? Can you post pictures of them?

Sorry, i mean a bleach dip. I dip all my plants in bleach (mixed with water about 1:16) to kill of snails and eggs before i put them in tanks which i don't want snails in.

I will post pics soon, i know i keep saying that but i have not got any good pics yet of them.
