Video of a Betta spawn

Hi guys - although the spawn was not a success - my boy ate all the eggs - seeing that it was his very first time I guess he kind of got confused as to what he should be doing.

But here is a video I'd like to share: (I have never tied posting a vid - I hope this works)

Oh just FYI - guys this tank setup is NOT the way a proper spawning tank should be. There should be no pebbles at all.

That is an excellent video of a spawning....He has the "wrap" down like an old pro! Too bad you don't have a little BF girly to breed to that handsome boy! Want me to send you one? lol

You wouldn't get the BF pattern out of the 2 you are breeding...If you want the BF pattern you need a BF girly.....Not sure what your 2 would produce....I also have my mustrad gas fry that are getting big....They will be turquoise like your boy...

We'll talk after the 1st of the year....Maybe we can work something out to send you a couple nice girls!

Guys! My boy is so depressed! He just sits in one corner now. it's his own fault that there are no babies!
How can I make him feel better? he is really down in the dumps.

Isis, my boy "Dunn" did that too....He loved his babies so much that when I removed him from the spawn tank 6 days later he moped and moped for days...He is the one that I used to surrogate that spawn of mustard gas fry when the Dad wouldn't care for them....

I'm sure he'll be fine in a few days....When do you plan on spawning them again? Maybe you could put the girl in a place where he can see her...

Oh shame... but I must say that boy you have is surely a good daddy- even if it's not his babies.

I'll try again in a month or so. I have the girls in the tank right in the middle of the boys' tanks- so they can see each other.

My female Scarlet is still very interested in the two boys. She is forever swimming up and down the side when on of the boys are close to the side of their tank.... seems like she likes having their attention.
The other girl Peanut is not interested in the boys at all.

any way... I'll try again in a few weeks form now. Scarlet got a nip or two that needs to heal first before she can go play with the boys again - but I must say I love how she excepts both the boys and she does not take long to get the thing going - such a flirty girl LOL!

Martinismommy: Would you suggest I put the spawning pair in a bucket? or perhaps close the sides of the tank so they wont see much of the outside world? maybe use a dark colored page or something so daddy can see the eggs and fry easier?

It just suddenly occurred to me that the tank was standing right next to a community tank. could it be that daddy got stressed by seeing the other fish in the other tank? could it have made him felt threatened?

maybe, he could have eaten the eggs because he didn't want the other fish to eat them?

I spawn in a 10 gallon sterilite plastic storage tub.....I keep the top on so they can't see me...I feel it is important for them to feel secure and alone when they are spawning....I have never spawned in a glass tank even though people have begged me to so I could take photos....

The answer to your question is YES, spawn them in a quiet place away from other fish.....I'm lucky enough to have a fish room set up for all my spawns and growing fry....

I think he ate the eggs because he got overwhelmed.....He may or may not do it again...You'll just have to see....I'd suggest you spawn when you are able to be around on hatching day so you can remove him once the fry start raining down....

I thought so. I must say I was poking around there like a child - so I guess it's my fault - but it was so cool and I wanted to see!!!!!

How about I cover the sides of the tank and leave an area where I an sneak a peak so I can see when the fry start falling etc? Isn't it hard for you to see if they are in a bucket?

Do you use something for them to build their nests? like a polystyrene cup or bubble wrap?

I'll be on leave for a whole week from the 12th of Jan... that gives the pair time to rest and get strong and I will have plenty of time to give them and the fry proper care

Your best bet is to use an Indian Almond leaf for the male to build his nest under...It also enhances the strength of the bubble nest and conditions the water.....You can purchase them on E-bay or Aquabid....
