| First Fry! - A few questions Hello everyone,
After a few attempts at breeding I was finally able to get a male and female to get along well enough to actually produce a nest full of eggs. The male is a half moon black orchid and the female is a half moon black and copper (with the copper having red undertones - its more rose colored than gold colored). The fry have hatched and most have started to swim out on there own.
A few questions regarding dad. Its been about 96 hours (4 days - Monday night) since the pair was put together. Tuesday night I can physically see the eggs, Wed night I thought dad had eaten them all, but Thurs morning, you could see dozens of tails hanging down from the nest. Now its friday night and the tails are gone. I can see the occasional fry darting around, and Im guessing that most of the others have gone exploring in the java moss. With dad, since most of the fry have left out on there own, is now a good time to pull dad? The reason for my inquiry is that there are a few fry that are often seen laying on the bottom of the tank under the bubblenest. Every so often Dad will spot them and blow them back up into the nest. The fish will swim around for a bit, and then rest again on the bottom of the tank . Is this normal? Do they need Dads constant help or is it safe to pull him from the tank?
Right now the fry and being fed with an egg yolk mix, plus Wardleys Small Fry liquid food as well as having additional green water added to the tank (as Ive been told this is full of good stuff for the fry) about 1/3 of the tank is covered in java moss as well.
Last count had two or three dozen live fry, plus those which escaped my eyes...they are SO tiny! Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! |
