Hi guys! Here is an update on my Sparatcus I got him about a month ago.

here is a before and now pic of the boy. He is doing real well... as you can see he is building his first nest (I take that as a sign that he is real happy )

fishlover78... I don't know. I've been reading up on breeding for a while now (some times tempted to give advice basted on what I've read and what I've learnt for you guys) but I don't have the guts right now.

I didn't want to tell you guys... but I made - what I think could have been a mistake -. My other boy Jacky also built a nest and... just to see what the would do... I put one of my females with him (not expecting anything)... and well... not even an hour later there where a few tiny little eggs. What I don't understand is... he never squeezed her... she kind of just let the eggs go and he did the spawing thing and picked them up and put them in the nest. (whats with that? and why did this all happen so quickly?
So Jacky is doing his dady-thing right now and I'm doing what I can and what I've learnt to keep the babies alive (the eggs only appeared today)

Guys I know you going to maon at me... but I really just wanted to see what my female and Jacky would do. I was expecting him to chase her and to see her hiding etc... and I was planing to take her out any way... but when I came over to take her out... guess what... eggs.

Shawnie - *blush* thank you. I'm real excited about what happened... just flabbergasted that it all happened in less than an hour LOL!

Problem now is that the tank is NOT a spawning/breeding tank at all. I guess I can't do water changes for a few days now?

... I better go look for those spawning threads now and see what you guys did...

Btw I read somewhere on a site that this guys used egg yolk to feed the fry. he would boil the egg and break it up and mix with water and put all that in a cloth and squeeze so that the fluid (egg and water) by the fry for them to eat.

Ever heard of that before? (I don't know if I trust that)

at least if they dont, you know they want to breed if you decide to do it again

I do know the bare bottom tanks work best for daddy ...and like I said theres tons of info from MM who kept up to date on all the adventures she took on...it will be fun for ssure!

I know you have been researching this as much as I was and am. Congrats! I would have tried my boys and girls of the past, but they never lasted long enough for me to get healthy for breeding time. As you all remember I have had a lot of trouble keeping pet store betta.

Shame on you Isis for letting those 2 breed! (I'm kidding of course) lol.....How exciting....Your boy is very handsome...Is the Mom a CT as well? I'm kind of wondering if the eggs got fertilized though....During the "wrap" is when the male releases the sperm which is when fertilization takes place....You'll know in a few hours if the eggs turn a white milky color...If nothing comes out of this at least you got to experience it and now know you have a great Daddy.....

Keep us posted...I'm excited for you!

Isis.....I wouldn't use egg yolk....It pollutes the water big time....If you order microworms online they can be expressed mailed which should allow delivery in time to feed the fry once they are free swimming....They really don't start eating until day 3.....They need to come out of that tank they are in as soon as you can spot them...I'd set something up today and get the temp controlled to 80 so you can be ready....Bare bottom tanks is the only way Betta fry can survive.....

If you have any questions feel free to ask......

Good luck!

Karen~

Oh I was waiting for you Martinismommy!! I really don't know if the eggs are fertilized. it all happened so quick! I missed it all but I can tell you that the eggs are a milky white color. So I hope they are.

btw what was that post's name of all the detail and pic's etc of the breeding?

Oh one more thing... how on earth do I get microworms? My fish store guy has no idea what I'm talking about. I know I can try and grow my own by adding some water to oats and leaving it... but will they grow if I don't have 'seed' to start it all?

oh oh and I have this very fine powder that I gave some of my guppy and mollie fry. It is so fine that when you put it in the water it just disappears. i don't have the name with me. I'm just wondering if I could try that?

i kind of just wanted to see if my female will bars or stripes and if would be able to see it LOL!
..Well I guess it was bars then hey? LOL!

Isis.....Just go throught the breeding section and look for my posts..I posted a bunch of times when mine were spawning....There are lots of photos too....

You can get microworms on E-bay or aquabid.....Quite honestly, this seems to be the only thing newborn fry will eat.....You can try hatching BBS and maybe they will eat that...The key is they have to have something live that moves....

Make sure you keep the tank at 80 and tightly covered....Also leave the light on 24/7 for the 1st 2-3 weeks....Take Dad out as soon as the fry are swimming.....Usually day 3....If he is getting overwhelmed when they eggs start hatching and it rains down fry take him out ASAP.....I just lost a whole spawn because the Dad got overwhelmed and ate the fry.....

One more thing....My very 1st spawn took place in less than an hour..So it is possible you will get fry.....

Btw have any of you guys tried using "infusoria" for feeding the fry?

they say here one a site that you can grow your own by doing this:

"Infusoria Snails: Apple snails and Colombian ramshorn snails eat prodigious amounts of plants. Their digested waste products will also jump start and feed an infusoria culture
Powdered Eggs: A tiny dab of powdered eggs also makes a great infusoria food. One packet of powdered eggs should last you a lifetime. Once you open it, store your excess in a sealed jar.
"

Martinismommy sorry to hear that you lost a whole spawn

I'm reading your threads and posts now... Oh I'm so excited

Yes, I used infusoria....You want the spawn tank loaded with plants...It is a good 1st food for fry along with microworms....I recommend Christmas moss....It is clean and doesn't shed..It's very soft too for the fry....

He's either a delta or halfmoon. I'd have to see him flaring to be sure. I'm sure Isis knows
