| One amazing Betta daddy! I started my mustard gas spawn Sunday evening...Pam was here to witness the set up and introduction.....It was quite a learning experience for her....The spawning took place Tues morning..The female beat the living daylights out of the male during the spawning process....After being beat up he was in no shape to tend to a nest full of babies.....He was hiding under a leaf and refused to come out....I was forced to make a decision...Should I leave the nest alone and hope they will hatch? NO...I knew they would all die off from fungus if not rotated by a male....I looked at all my healthy boys and decided to do a surrogate father to help hatch the babies....So......
The end of this amazing story goes as follows......"Dunn" my copper boy went into the spawning tank with the nest built by another pair...The fertilized eggs stared falling from the nest...He raced around and picked them up and insterted them back into the bubbles....In the middle of the night he built his own bubble nest on the other side of the tank...He moved the eggs to the new nest he built...And as unbeliveable as this is I now have little wigglers! He is tending to them just like they were his own...He has the babies in both nests and is swimming his butt off trying to keep them safe and sound....This is beyond adorable!
Here are the natural parents....And also my boy who is worth his weight in gold "Dunn" I'm praying the babies continue to grow and thrive despite this very unusual start in life.....Perhaps this is a story for the betta books..I'd caution not to try this with a male that has not been a proven good father...Even then there could be a chance he would eat the eggs....My boy chose to care for them and I feel so lucky right now.....
"Dunn" is the Copper/lavendar boy... |

| I cant get over how amazing this miracle is. What a boy, Good Old Dunn swims in and takes care of the eggs as if they are his very own. That really is a miracle.

My leg is slowly getting better....I had a little set back though....My bone shifted from the plate and they may have to go back in....I'll know more at my next visit on Dec. 3rd..I'm still in a wheel chair and caring for all these bettas is a real challange....Thanks for asking.....
Yes, I do plan on breeding Patron....He will be bred to my butterfly girl Shannon.....They will probably be my next spawn...I can't do anymore breedings until I move my Dunn babies into a grow out tank...My fish room is getting crowded lol |

| darn that stinks!!! I wish I was closer id help with the chores! have you found a place to buy them off you? and how many all together do you have now? have you seperated any of your fry into individual cups yet? |

| No seperating them yet...My 1st spawn is starting to have tudes though lol.....I won't seperate them until I see some serious issues....I have homes for several of the fry....Haven't contacted my fish store yet....I'll wait to see how many I end up with.....Right now I probably have around 75 with all 4 spawns ...You always start out with 100's of fry but by the time they are 1 month old you are usually down to around 20....They are getting really cute and colorful.....I'll take some pics when I feel a busrt of energy! I plan on listing the best pairs on Aquabid when they reach 3.5 months old...And of course the best of the best stays with me...I'll be taking them to TX to the IBC show next year... |

*snatches Dunn*
hehe, that'll solve my naughty egg eating boy problem...
Now that I know that can actually work, if I EVER find a male who's a good dad again I'll have to try it out next time I spawn one of my many deadbeats

| What an amazing sight to see the introduction and I'm in awe that I got to witness it in person! I guessed the same thing you did, that your best bet was to have proven great betta-dad Dunn tend to the babies since Maui was so torn up. What did you have to lose at that point?
But what a leap! Has anybody ever done this before, as far as you know? |

| Pam, a lot of breeders will set up a couple of pairs at the same time. If one of the dads is a dud, it's pretty common to foster the eggs into the nest of another male who's tending his own. This is the first I've heard of someone swapping in a male who hadn't spawned recently. A lot of people have speculated on whether it would actually work or not, but no one's tried it! Until now |

| That is amazing. Dunn is such a handsome boy and it sounds like he is just as sweet. I'm sorry to hear that your leg is not well...I completely missed the post about you breaking it. I have never broken anything so I don't know first hand what you are going through. I hope it gets better for you soon. Last edited by Darlene; November 21st, 2008 at 08:15 AM.

| WOW!! That is so cool Karen! Dunn is an amazing boy for many reasons but this makes him even more special.
Poor Maui, so pretty. Hope you and he are up on your feet and fins soon.
My turquoise female beat the tar out the male too...before he even had a chance to show off for her.
I cannot win here lol. |

Sorry you lost him.
My boys are wimps. They get across the divider all the time (I've fixed the problem now though) and they never hurt each other at all. (Except for Floyd, he was a beast). |

Could she have wiggled thru the divider somehow. Those sneaky female wiggle thru the tiniest of space. |
