The Breeder tank

20g Rubbermaid container filled up 4", floaters and one planted pot so the floaters have an anchor. Zeus is loving swimming around in it. I will be putting Hera in there in a few hours and wait to see what happens in 3-5 days.
Tell me what ya'll think.

I know he is so goofy looking, in an ugly but cute way.
Thanks...I hope things go better this time. Now that I have some better info thanks to MM & Pandora, maybe this time will work.

Lol, that's how I feel about my rubbernose pleco.

It's great that we've got them on here. It's very helpful for those who want to give breeding a try!

I have many tanks set up, the rubber maid was full of water for days now so I had good water to start, took out the plants out of Zeus's side of the tank, added some more plants from the 15g. Which is just planted, no fish at the moment. Voila, added the heater put the glass over top, which makes it really steamy/humid in the tank. You can feel the difference in temp.
I pretty much got at it right after I talked to you earlier. I will get the plate soon, just looking for something here to try. I think the floating plants maybe enough to support a nest tho.

Looks good!
Yes, the plants should help support a nest too... when I use IAL leaves often my boys will ignore the cup (I usually use 1/2 styrofoam cup as a nest anchor) and go build it off in a corner under a leaf just to annoy me... pretty much anything at the surface will give them something to attach bubbles to. They seem to like to have options, though, so never hurts to have more! I've had them build multiple nests, move eggs after spawning, move fry after hatching, etc.
Strange fish
Hopefully they cooperate for you this time!

Zeus had a bunch of little ones going last time under the different leaves of the floaters. So maybe this time something may happen.
I'll keep trying until I get fry from someone. I must raise baby betta, even if it's just once.

They have been in the breeder tank since last night, nothing going on but flirting. I have been trying not to go check on them as much too. I will get some IAL soon. I should go picking oak leaves today, but it's windy and out today.

MM Maybe if you try breeding the dragons to others ( maybe each to a experienced fish) and see if they learn how it goes and then try them again at a later date after they learn the ropes...maybe they will accept each other then...good luck.

At least you have some who have spawned for you.
I am just curious about the possible genetics issues I was told they could have. Heather is a smart lady, she would have told me something like that before selling them as a pair. If there are one who are deformed I will cull them, got learn how to get the guts for the future. If not...
***I can see it now the whole apartment over run with 2-5g tanks and deformed betta everywhere.***
Ha ha, Maybe I shoud send Hera to you and you send me your female lol

She and Zeus are getting along too well, like they know they a brother and sister or something. No nipping at all. Zeus did rip his dorsal, probably on those stupid fake plants I had in the 10g when I first tried them.

Yeah, culls are the hardest part of it. Every single spawn is going to have the odd deformed baby, it's an unfortunate fact of breeding something that produces 100's of eggs... some proportion are not going to be perfect. Most of the time it's an 's' shaped spine to various degrees, though swim bladder problems are also really common, and more serious since they won't grow up to be able to have a normal life (while depending on the severity of the spinal kink often they can). Luckily both tend to show up really young, before a month of age when they haven't developped into distinct individuals yet so it's not quite as hard. The other deformity I see a fair bit is deformed gill covers that sort of stick out... but I haven't figured out if that's a genetic issue, or a water issue or a bit of both... I've never bred any that do, and they seem to show up in groups in a spawn, but often it's totally unrelated spawns that'll have larger than expected numbers, so who knows!
