Finding a female for my betta :]

I want to get a female for my male betta so he will have some company. He is currently in a 25 gallon tank and is king of it haha When I get a female I plan to setup a private tank for them soon after. MY question is: does anyone have any pointers on picking out a good healthy female Betta?

Attached is a pic of Mr. Betta

Yeah, they shouldn't be kept together except during breeding, and these are one of the most expensive fish to breed.

Look for good looking, and half descent, healthy female bettas from either a fish only store or try to find one at Petsmart/Co. Only add the female to the males tank when the female shows her "Im ready to breed" bars on her body, which appear after she's been conditioned. Also, the male should have constructed a bubble nest to tell he's ready to breed too. Only add the two together when these signs occur in a close time period (they may not happen on the same day)

They shouldn't be kept together and breeding will lose you tons of money and lots of time. Sucks, doesn't it

One thing to watch for at some pet stores they will sell round tail bettas for females. They aren't true plakats since they are shaped more like the veil tails but look a lot like females especially when they are young. At the chain pet store that likes to have blue water in their cups it is very hard to tell the difference until you get them home and in their own tank. If you plan on breeding them do a lot of research ahead of time so you are prepared.

Yea, they just are happier on their own and even when you do breed a couple, it's a careful process that could result in injuries even then.
