I have had the filter running for a few days now, and the water hasn't fouled at all. Now i can go back to weekly water changes. I knew that a filter was the answer, i guess i was just a bit bewildered as to why the water fouled so quickly in the ten gallon.
Back to my male bettas tail problem- is there any chance of this clearing up eventually? it hasnt shown any sign of improvement, nor has it worsened. I have decided to put him in a quarantine tank, and add a bit of aquarium salt to the water. Hopefully this will help a bit.

Salt's really not good for Bettas and can cause a sort of reverse-osmosis effect on them, dehydrating them and damaging the slime coat.

If his tail has the same thing as angel's, it'll probably just stay that way but isn't anything to worry about.

just wanted to post an update saying my male bettas fins have almost completely returned to normal. i guess i was just worrying too much, and the hands off approach seemed to be the solution.
