Here we go again... I rescued another one.

I had no plans to get another betta but in browsing through Petsmart the other day (I really need to stay away from there) I noticed they had set up a BiOrb tank as a display and put 3 female Bettas in it. A Cambodian, a red and a blue female. They had just set it up that day and I noticed the girls seemed to be getting along okay and no one had stress stripes. No chasing or nipping. I was relieved. I went back the next day to check on them and saw the red and the blue had fin damage that was not there before and they had paled out and had stress stripes. The Cambodian had no fin damage and was obviously the Alpha female. I did not have a good feeling about this. I went today to see them again and was horrified to see the Cambodian had bitten the blue female on the belly and wouldn't let go. She was dragging her around like a rag doll. Then the red female decided to get in on this and started biting the blue female's fins and shredding them more. I banged on the tank and they let her go and she just floated motionless to the bottom. She had a little blood coming from the wound on her belly and another bite on her head. I thought she was dead and I was heartbroken! I put my finger on the glass near where she was and suddenly she started moving and slowly approached my finger and put her mouth against the glass right where my finger was. She looked at me with such despair it felt like a knife in my heart. I could not leave her there. I would have felt like a monster walking away from her. She had made a connection with me and I knew she was meant to be mine.
I didn't even have a tank for her and very little money but I picked up a 2.5 gallon glass tank with a glass lid for very cheap and had some spare heaters at home and a small Whisper filter. I got the lady who runs the fish dept and asked her to take out the blue female for me. I told her what I had witnessed and she said she would take out the remaining two and put in something else like maybe guppies. I suggested a single male or female Betta so at least one would get out of the cup but begged her to not put female Bettas together anymore. I don't know if it will help but it helped in this case at least.
The blue female had been a gorgeous deep blue when I first saw her in the tank at the store but after being bullied for two days she had turned a light gray with thick black stress stripes. She did not even look like the same fish. I got her home and set up her little home. I was worried the 2.5 gallon tank would be so small but after setting it up and putting her in, it actually looks like a very suitable home for a female Betta. She LOVES her new home! She swam around like crazy exploring and within 10 minutes, when she realized she was safe, she lost her stress stripes and became a brilliant blue again. Her tank is right next to Niles and he is beside himself with joy over having a pretty girl neighbour! He's been prancing around with his fins spread out and furiously making a bubblenest right in front of her to impress her. It's so cute what a flirt he is! She loves the attention too.
I am medicating her a little because she has bite wounds and shredded fins but she seems healthy and active otherwise with an unholy fascination with her thermometer. She even ate a little.
Here are some pics of my new blue girl (note the shredded anal fin) and some of the hopelessly smitten Niles.

Wow a pink betta!
I love the blue girl! Shame, what a hard life it is for them, when they are at the petstores. How many of them must be dieing before they get sold! I thought you only get plain female bettas.

Oh that sounds awful. You did so well to take her home. Well done. And well done for speaking to the petstore lady. I often hesitate as they can take it really badly.

She looks a bright colour already.

Is that tank really just a 2.5G? It looks very roomy. I think she'll be really happy. I hope you can fix all the wounds.

Re: Here we go again... I rescued another one.

Congrats on the rescue.. i know we couldn't have left her to die either.. that's how we ended up with Sweetie, only she'd gone thru her attack damage before we found her but was obviously doomed in her dirty cup. your girl sounds like she had a worse time of it and i'm glad that she's already lost her stripes.. that's a very good sign - Sweetie took weeks to lose hers. does she have one of those glass thermometers? do you have liquid vitamins for her.. sweetie had quite a lot of fin damage and scale loss and the vitachem really helped her regrowth.

it's great to see her in a loving home. we put paper up on aslan's tank because he acted like Niles and was giving Sweetie vertical stripes. Best of luck with her and we look forward to hearing her progress as she heals up.

What a lovely story! She looks very happy - and what girl wouldn't be happy in her own place with a really cute neighbor?

The poor girl...I'm so glad you rescued her. She looks so much like my Cascada. What are you going to call her? I hope her fins grow back ok...let us know how she is doing.

Re: Here we go again... I rescued another one.

She's doing good today. She has turned an even more brilliant blue! She looks like a florescent blue-violet color! She is still timid but looks happy, no stress stripes. She's active and exploring. She got her first pea treat last night. She doesn't know how to hand-feed yet so I let it drop in front of her. She followed it down not really knowing what to do with it. Then she tasted it and liked it.

Yes, she (and all my fish) get Kent Zoe Vitamins and Kordon's Fish Protector.

Armadillo: I too was surprised at how spacious the 2.5 gallon is for a female Betta. She's a very tiny baby still about 6-8 weeks old. She has the tiniest, cutest little ventral fins.

Sabi: Female Bettas are very colorful just like the males. Most often you see them in cups at the store where they are stressed and they lose their color, or they are so young they haven't fully developed their color or fins yet.

She slept under the heater last night. She's never been in warm water so I think she's really enjoying it.

Niles wouldn't settle down last night and go to sleep so I had to put a book between them for the night otherwise he'd be dancing and shaking his booty at her all night long! It's so funny how silly and excited he is! He's usually so mellow.

Re: Here we go again... I rescued another one.

Oh so THAT's what happened to my molly. I had a female recently arrived from the store and I thought she was sick because she would always hang around the heater. Maybe she was in cold water in the store too. She's stopped going that. Now her favorite pastime is bullying.

Oh, dang. I was hoping she was an adult, in which case a 2.5G looked more than spacious enough for the million bettas I was going to buy. So 5G is still the minimum for adults, I guess.

Re: Here we go again... I rescued another one.

No, I would have no guilt in putting any of my adult females in the 2.5 gallon. Females are smaller than males and the tank would suit any of them just fine. If you have the space for a 5.5 gallon then that's even better and if you get just the glass tank alone the 5.5 gallon doesn't cost any more than the 2.5 gallon. I like the glass rectangular tanks better than a tall 2.5 gallon Hex tank because it has more surface space and more swimming space. The tall tanks they can only swim up and down and you are very limited in decorations and plants you can fit in it.
Even a male would not be unhappy in a 2.5 gallon. Think of how many live their entire life in a tiny bowl or vase. A 2.5 gallon is heaven compared to that. You should always get the largest tank you can manage though because the larger it is, the more stable the water parameters will be. With a small tank you need to keep a VERY close eye on temp to make sure it is not getting overheated. I have a 25 watt heater in there and on the very lowest setting it holds the temp at 80F. It can be hard to find heaters that are small enough and not too overpowering that you'll cook your fish in a small tank.

Re: Here we go again... I rescued another one.

i like to give them space if i can, but i have a few in 2.5g tanks and they're happy and active with decorations they enjoy in their tanks.

Re: Here we go again... I rescued another one.

Yeah, Phloxface. I dont' like tall ones either. The vertical motion only doesnt' feel fish-right. So 2.5G is OK space-wise. I'll think about it. I was thinking of 5G per betta for my own setup. But look at me dreaming away. I've already negociated one betta. I'll see about others later.

Re: Here we go again... I rescued another one.

Cujo and Romeo are in 2.5g mini-bows right now, and they are fine. I would love to give them more room (like Jett in his 5g), and I'm contemplating a 12 gallon tank that I would divide for them. Just space and finances holding me back But in truth I don't feel like it's anything that's necessary for them for their well being, just something I'd like to do for myself.

Phlox - your new girl is lovely. I'm so glad you got her out of that terrible situation and into your loving home. And I'm also happy to see some new pics of Niles. I showed them to Romeo to remind him of what he is supposed to look like and he says he will try to remember.

Re: Here we go again... I rescued another one.

Congrats on saving the little fish. I agree that petstores have no idea what they are doing when it comes to pets that is. Such a shame. I was in petsmart yesterday and saw a yellow male betta he was so pretty i wanted to rescue him but I have no other place to put him. Plus my girlfriend would have killed me. LOL

Re: Here we go again... I rescued another one.

Phlox.....she is lovely........great rescue.........I wouldn't have been able to resist either. What is her name?? I have Storm in a 3gal Eclipse and he loves it. I am cycling another 3g Eclipse for Wink JS. Neptune is in a 6g, but I love the 3g's............there is plenty of room. Little Wink is currently in the 1.66 g hex and while he thinks it is great, he will go nuts ( well, more nuts) in the 3 when he gets moved. he never stops and the hex tank is up and down, round and round.................I don't like the hex personally for just that reason, and also because he sees his reflection in the corners and is always flaring at that handsome little fish he sees in reflection!!

Keep us posted.............Again, great rescue...............great karma is yours!!! Val
