| Our Mahachai Betta Family Well, today for about 3-4 hours near noon, our betta sp. Mahachai pair (Anakin & Amidala) spawned what i hope is around 100 eggs. We've got the video link posted on our tanks page and will try to post more video or pics.. whatever i can take without disturbing the bettas. |

| Re: Our Mahachai Betta Family OMG!!! congrats!!!! thats so great!!! before i knew really what i was doing my sister and i tried to breed/spawn Calamarrie and my first betta Aquamarine - not a good idea. he bite her and she had a hole in her fin that never completely healed before she died. she was healthy though. i think - i feel REALLY bad now because she was in on of those tanks they say are made mjust for bettas. you know the less than a half gallon of water in them tanks. i feel bad about it. but enough of me - CONGRATS!!!! YAY!!!! im so happy for you!!!! Miley |

It helps that the male & female mahachai can live in the same tank so it's not as complex as the way you have to introduce pet store bettas to each other and watch for them hurting each other.
I hope to take pictures - we'll have to see if i can get any in the lighting around their tank and if i can do it without upsetting anakin as he guards the nest. |

| Re: Our Mahachai Betta Family WOW! Dave and Stacy I am so excited for you. I know that you've been keeping a close watch on them to see if they would mate soon. That's great. Are you going to get another tank to at least keep some of them in another tank? Hopefully they will all live and if they do obviously you can't keep them all in that tank as you know. Aw, I'm so excited for you. Congratulations Anakin and Amidala on becoming new parents!! So what does this make you Grandma and grandpa to the babies Dave? Ha! Ha! LOL. Just kiddin. Natalie |

| Re: Our Mahachai Betta Family Well, the mahachai fry are supposed to be safe with the parents after they're free swimming and slower growing than splendens, so they could stay in the tank with mom & dad until the next spawn. From our fishblog:
There's not a lot of info on breeding the mahachai and we found out something that would've been good to know sooner. This morning, Amidala decided to have eggs for breakfast and ruined the nest going after some. So they are safe together, but it would seem that separating the female from the nest until the fry are out is a good step to take. So I put up the separator after carefully removing her to a cup, putting the plants and caves to a bowl and cleaning the bare bottom of the tank to move any eggs i could find to under the nest for Anakin to put back in as he worked on rebuilding the nest. Surprisingly, he wasn't at all timid with me working in the tank. He's been working on rebuilding the nest today and hopefully we'll still get at least some fry from this first spawn, but i'd be surprised to have even a few dozen hatch. The next spawning, the separator goes up as soon as she's done dropping her eggs. |

| Re: Our Mahachai Betta Family Do you reckon she might have really ruined their chances? I guess you'll know in a week or so, right? (if there are any developments).
Even if it doesn't work out this time round, think positive: now you know they can hatch in your care, and you could put this one down to experience. Buuuut, there's no saying it's not worked. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. |

I should see fry in the bubbles soon if any are going to develop and then little tails a day or so after that. At least with splendens the fry show in 18 hours and tails hang from eggs at 36 hours.. it maybe longer with mahachai and from where the nest is (i'll be putting a new bowl in a different location for the next spawn) i might not see anything until the little tails are hanging down. |

He'll need to recover from tending this nest. |
