did some serious spring cleaning

As most of you have heard, I fight fin rot with Cobalt all of the time. He has had it since I got him with some improvement and then it strikes again. So today I did a huge water change-- 99%. I say 99% b/c I wanted to still keep the gravel wet. I did super gravel vac and sucked up all kinds of gunk.
I replaced his water with 75% spring water and 25% tap. I hope I dont cause a mini cycle. I have Cobalt floating in the cup right now and he wants out, but I have to make sure that the temp adjusts. The spring water was room temp, because I am at work and have no real way to heat it. I added hot tap water, but is is still ony at 78. I keep him at 80-82, so it will be a few hours floating in the cup to adjust to the temp. I don't want to shock him.

I hope this super duper clean water does the trick! I am using vitamins by Marineland. Keep your fins crossed.

Best of luck with your 'spring cleaning' there. Did you remember to dust and polish Cobalt?

No, but it was so funny--- He thought I was going to give him a treat and when I snuck up behind him and sucked him into a cup, he was --- well lets just say "less than pleased"

Re: did some serious spring cleaning

RJ hates the dreaded net. The last time I tried catching him in that he gave me a real hard time. So, finally I got smarter and scooped up in the cup that I had Royell in when I brought him home from Petsmart (sanitized of course). So from now on when I have to take him out for any reason that's what use. I just sneak up on him real slow and scoop him and before you know he's going nuts in this little cup. Then he usually turns around and gives me a dirty look as if to say " how dare you sneak up on me like that!" LOL.. Rose is right.. even our platys swim for cover when they see 'the cup of doom'.. fortunately we don't have to take our bettas out too often and their stomachs usually betray them with a strategically placed treat. When I do have to cup a betta, it usually earns me some flaring the rest of the day. LOL

Funny, all my fish swim freely into the cup everytime except Angel. I usually have to chase her or distract her with food to catch her. The others really don't mind. They even swim in when I don't want them to, like when I use the cup to add fresh water during the water changes. They fight the current of water pouring out and swim into the cup anyways.

Re: did some serious spring cleaning

Not to be outdone...LOL...Neptune is the same way..although I have only cupped him twice. If I am anywhere near the inside of the tank, he is right there always in the way! " Playtime...yay..maybe she will feed me if I do cool things."..LOL!

When I siphon out the tank, he practically goes up the end of it before it gets to the bottom, and then has to explore it up and down. the cup, he also swam into it, like," cool, is this a hot tub? Trampoline? garden with food? What do I have to do for a treat?""....ya, ok......I'n gone.

So does anyone else say each side of the conversations with your fish out loud... It is like a one man play at my house, with me doing all the voices.......cuckoo. cuckoo....speaking of nets!!!! Genie, Ms. Fish-o-holic...it must keep you really busy doing all the voices...LOL

Re: did some serious spring cleaning

Oh I speak what my fish are thinking all the time.... Mostly it's like "Hey Gigantor, put some food in the tank!"

Neither of mine went happily into the cups yesterday, maybe I'll try the food distraction method.
