Re: fins and tail look weird after healing (clamped fins and tails)

If you use spring water, I'd try testing the pH of the spring water to be sure it's close to the tank water.. I think when we got some spring water it was 7.5 pH

The other thing too is that some fish have different personalities--some bettas are super aggressive--Rusty was--others are more peaceful. Gouramis can be the same way, from verging on psychotic to utterly timid. So it was a gamble, for sure.

poefox is totally right.. we have that range in the 3 Bettas we have.. Aslan is a big, bad boy and Sora won't even get upset with a mirror. LOL

The Betta was semi-aggressive at the beginning but after the gourami beat him up he became a wuss..probably lost his manhood already. :P

Once he's recovered, he might get his attitude back.

Re: fins and tail look weird after healing (clamped fins and tails)

question..
if the Betta keeps swim back and forth in front of the tank (very quickly) while all the other fishes are swimming between plans and being very comfortable in the tank, does it mean something wrong with the Betta

Re: fins and tail look weird after healing (clamped fins and tails)

Sorry if you already answered this but as long as the source of the aggression is in the tank, your betta's attitude is not going to change. In fact it will get worse. Stress has a lot to do with a Betta's health and willl kill a betta who does not have it removed. If the gourami is causing the betta to be fearful then the betta will die of stress with the gourami in the tank even if they never have another confrontation. It will simply stress him to death.

There are good reasons for them not to be put together and getting a larger fish on one or the other side of the scale is not going to prove the rule untrue. The pet store employee was an idiot.

Rose--don't worry, I believe Fishlover mentioned earlier that the Gourami has been removed from the tank.

So...stress is probably not the factor here. One reason why a lot of intelligent animals will pace back and forth is due to boredom. Your Betta may simply need some stimulation. He's recovered from the fight and now he is looking for something a bit more productive to be doing. I don't know how much you interact with your fish, but try simply sitting by the tank for a while, talking to him. You could teach him to hand feed (just be careful not to give too much food!), or to do tricks or something. This will help you bond and give him something to do. I also know some Bettas like watching tv, if there is one in the room.

By the way, I don't know if you've mentioned yet but does your betta have a name?

Yes the Gourami has been removed from the tank a week ago. I do sit in front of the tank and try to talk to him..my gf said that I'm spending too much time in front of the tank. :
Actually I do have a big TV across the fish tank, maybe he's trying to get a good angle

I haven't named him yet..couldn't come up with a good one. open for suggestions

I tried to hand feed him and he does respond most of the time but recently one of my platy is pregnant and she's extremely hungry for food so kind of steal from him from time to time.

Given his recent experiences, maybe you could call him Rocky. 8)
