Dory's NEW TANK! + pictures

Finally, Dory has a nice 5-gallon hex tank all to himself. I haven't put him IN it yet (since I'm going to run the heater and filter for a good while first), but you can see what the tank set-up looks like. I tried to block the blunt of the current with plants, since he's been in still bowl water his whole life. I also got him this massively cool root-like tank ornament he can swim all around, inside, and through and can't get stuck or snagged anywhere.

Here's the tank from the front. The tank ornament is pretty big, but not nearly as big as it looks in the picture and he will still have LOTS of room to swim around!

Here's from a side so you can see the cool root thing a little better:

Really nice tank. Dory will have a lot to play with in there. He will be blowing big bubblenests for sure.

Let's hope Dory loves it too! I'm going to be adding him today, since the temperature's been stable at about 81 and everything seems to be running perfectly. He's going to be cycling the water for me... I was a little worried about it until I realized he's been cycling his own water for his whole life living in a bowl with infrequent water changes. I'll let everyone know how it goes!

You will love that tank. It is such an easy tank to care for. It's look s really nice. He will have blast in there. Just keep a close eye on the water parameter's so that don't too high.Congratulations!! Natalie

Re: Dory's NEW TANK! + pictures

Oh! I forgot to ask. What kind of bag should/could I use to float Dory in the new tank? Would a regular ziplock work?

For no longer than he will be in there, a ziploc will be fine as long as it is new.

Nice tank

If I get a Betta from a place that sells them in cups, I just float them in their cup.

Re: Dory's NEW TANK! + pictures

Well he sure doesn't like the ziplock bag, but I think he'll forgive me He seems to be pretty interested in his surroundings though! From everyone else's experience, I'm going to keep his light off for a few days (with the room light on) so he won't freak out too much. Wish me luck trying to tell when the bag water's warm enough

Update: Dory is exploring! Unfortunately he seems most interested in the thermometer, heater, filter, and other such mechanics hidden in the back of the tank than the nice expensive tank ornament I got him right in the front. He is certainly a curious fish. I'm going to wait until he calms down a little, then start treating him with the Maracyn combo for his tail rot right away.

Re: Dory's NEW TANK! + pictures

My Bettas are all fascinated with their thermometers too!
I have the same tree root decoration in one of my tanks. Make sure you fill the top with gravel or stuff some filter floss in there. It has hollow roots and I was concerned my curious Betta would get stuck inside there. I left just a little space on the top and when my male Lava had the root he loved to rest inside it like a bed.

Re: Dory's NEW TANK! + pictures

I actually stuck a little plant in the top of it because I noticed that problem too.

Today Dory seems to appreciate the whole tank more and is hanging out in the front where I can see him, which is nice. His fin rot still looks real iffy, but I'm on the second day of the combo Maracyn medication so I'm not TOO worried (yet).

The parameters look good: Ammonia is at about 0.

One last question: How quickly is the cycle supposed to happen? I did add some gravel from his bowl which I assumed was cycled because I tested its week-old water before I moved him out of it and both the Ammonia and Nitrites were at 0 (I can't afford a Nitrate test yet, I have to get these things one at a time). If it was cycled, I assume that means it should speed up this process. I still don't have a good grasp of exactly how long it can take one small fish to foul up a 5-gallon tank.

Oh, and I attached some new pics too
