Walmart! :(

Yesterday I was out shopping, and visited the bettas at my local wally-world to make sure eveyone wasn't stacked up and had enough water inther cells. Plus, I'm still trying to figure out what color I want to get when my tank is finsihed cycling. What I found sickened me!!! There was a betta in a gallon fish bowl with a plant stuck in it, but the plant was in a little plastic tray that had a hole for the roots to stick into the water, and the plastic tray completly covered the opening of the bowl so that there must have been very little oxygen that was able to get to the water. I propped the plastic tray up on a rock so that the roots were still in the water (i wouldn't wan't to kill the plant... it's not its fault) but that way air could circulate. the bowl was filthy! It breaks my heart to see the fish kept that way.

Re: Walmart! :(

Ditto ~J~

I think I posted about that here too. I'd found the cups stacked at Walmart! We were just there the other day and, yep, had to be unstacked again. It's hard to understand how people don't notice the 1 lil 'x' cut in the plastic top for it to breathe and think to not to stack them and cover it. I guess with Betta, some think it's a regular fish that doesn't breathe the air...I don't know.

I engaged a salesman recently who was wandering around by the fish. It was clear he knew alot about fish and Betta and we spent an hour I think talking about all of that, and his tank at home. I asked if this was his dept. He said he'd been moved to another. I asked why he didn't come back to the fish dept. (he cares about the fish, kept them clean when he had that dept...and was not happy with the state of the fish tanks and Bettas currently so it didn't make sense, he needed to work that area). He said he didn't like the manager. That wasn't it. He acted like he'd been insulted by him or something. He was a noticeably gay black man. Someone I'd want working for me for sure! It's a shame if he has troubles like that and that the fish and Betta don't get to benefit from him working that area.

It wouldn't take much at all for Walmart to tighten up their act and be kinder to the Betta and other fish there. I wonder why they don't. It's easy enough to pay someone a buck more an hour that either knows or will learn about caring for the fish and will educate their customers on their care <shrug>and to certainly utilize the talent you already have working for you...

Maybe not enough public pressure?

Your post was a nice reminder for me that there are others out there unstacking the cups ((Timesdragondry))
