I found an "informative" site too...
http://www.galitz.com/fishtank/bettas.html
When I read through some of the dangerously wrong answers I felt SO sorry for the Bettas who's well-meaning but misguided owners believed and followed the "advice" given!
It's sad that so many people (mostly newbies) simply read the first site they land on and believe it without question. They don't even bother to look further.
I wish people needed some kind of license before posting up a website giving people information and "advice".
One of the many pearls of wisdom:
"I have a male beta fish, I will be going out of town for two weeks and don't have anyone to watch him. Will he survive...is there anything I can do to make sure he'll be ok?"
"If you can't find anyone, you can take your chances. Feed him heavily on live (brine shrimp, worms) and flake food for a week before you leave. If you can find some recently hatched fish fry that would be perfect. He should store up some fat that way. "
Umm yeah... and don't be surprised when you find him dead of constipation when you come back...
