True black Bettas are called Melanos. They are unfortunately sterile so they are indeed rare and are only found as a type of fluke of other matings. They are very beautiful and usually can NEVER be found in fish or pet stores. You are indeed a very lucky lady. I would give him a place of distinction and keep him very carefully. It is very doubtful that you will ever find another locally. I had a little black female who passed away this year and she was purchased directly from a breeder for half my right arm.
