While you had a fish in there, a daily water change was probably appropriate to keep the tank at a level that he could tolerate but it really slowed down the cycle immensely. Now you have no fish in there do you? The cycle can be safely done at a much faster rate and you do not need to worry about the levels of ammonia and nitrite and nitrate building up and then going down up they will and then go away naturally on their own to 0 and then you will know they are naturally cycled. You will need to only add at the most one or two fish at the most at the end of the cycle though or you will overload the cycle as it does need a while for all the bacteria to catch up to being ready to handle a full load for a community tank.
