Maybe it was for the bettas' benefit? After all, the bettas probably had a horrible life in those cups. So maybe it is better?

Sometimes, to be blunt, animals need to be killed in the name of mercy. Animals that cannot be guaranteed care, wounded or sick animals beyond recovery and so on. It's an unpleasant side of the responsibility but one that has to be done at times.

Well, that's true if you think of it that way. I am sure the Bettas are much happier up in fishy heaven than they were in their little torture chambers at the store. Then again I just hope the store killed them humanely if that's what they did...
It certainly doesn't raise my respect for that store though that they kill animals just because they view them as old and worthless. That is terrible. I don't think it was necessary for the store to get rid of all of them and I don't want to seem like I am condoning such killing. As far as I'm concerned, killing animals for no good reason is the same as murder. That's not to say that there aren't times when it is ok, but this store incident certainly is NOT ok.
