Re: new low for betta tanks

That's really strange...I wonder why anyone would even think of that. The only things I can think of that are worse are the betta purse and that vase with the plant in it that traps the betta inside.

Re: new low for betta tanks

I never cease to be amazed at the things people come up with to make a quick buck at the expense of other living things..and while one can plead ignorance sometimes, awareness of the do's and dont's is, in most cases, a phone-call, a conversation with an experienced fish-keeper or a web-search away..frankly, I'm so jaded with people on a whole, that money-makers like that piece of tank no longer surprise me..let's face it folks, when it comes to making money, this is not one of our finest moments as caretakers of this planet and its other inhabitants..so tanks like that, and Betta-purses,and whatever other inhumane accessories pet-supply companies come up with, will always be marketed..the million-dollar question is, will you be one of the mindless consumers who purchase these things?.. mull it over, because from the moment you, like me , keep fish in a tank, an artificial environment where they get sick and die a lot faster than in a natural one, 'We' are only less guilty than those companies.. but guilty nevertheless of not allowing living-things to exist in the way Nature intended.

why do you have fishtanks if this bothers you so much?

Re: new low for betta tanks

Because I,like you, enjoy fish..so 'We' do what we can to keep them healthy and happy in their artificial environment, and we try to make that environment as natural for the fish as possible..keeping fish in a tank has never been a contentious issue for me,but I've always been a 'call a spade a spade' kinda guy..and from the moment a fish is placed in a tank, that's not the way Nature intended it to be..I merely stated that fact..so ok,maybe 'guilty' was a bit of an overstatement, perhaps culpable is the word I should've used.

Re: new low for betta tanks

Actually, nature intending things is all very well and good, but we have domestic animals which includes pets, and the real point is to look after the ones that we have as best we are able. However I do agree with you that money often seems to overwhelm both common sense and decency.

Re: new low for betta tanks

I have often thought as I watched my fish frolicking in the tanks, how they would be in their natural environments and then I think, well, perhaps they have a happier existence as I have no predatory fish in my tanks and with the help of you fine people, have made their environments as roomy and natural as possible. I saw the same Betta tank at my LFS today and was disgusted. Will not be going back there at all and had a heated discussion with the owner. Yuck. Guess I am on a roll lately!!!!I will have to travel 30 miles one way to get to a lfs but that is okay with me!!!!!!

Re: new low for betta tanks

The Bettas that lived in the rice paddies or small puddles in Thailand bear no resemblance to the lovely long-finned wonders that we own now. Those fish have very short fins and resemble an ugly colored platy more than any betta you will find at your LFS. Our bettas are born and bred in clean, clear water and are used to being in good conditions right up until they go on sale in those idiot small cups. Even when the Breeders put them in the small containers, they keep the water scrupulously clean as the fins need to grow in clean water or they are deformed. It is to their best interest to treat the fry very well as they never know when a show quality betta will show up.

Re: new low for betta tanks

That is just awful! I mean, I always thought it would be cool to have an O-shaped tank like that, but holy , if I was going to attempt it I would do it intelligently. I'm guessing I could make one that would be the same shape, just big enough for the betta to actually enjoy it... and with enough space at the top that the betta could breath. **screams and attacks idiots who can't design intelligent betta tanks**

I have nightmares about accidentally spilling pellets by the dozen into Rusty's tank and watching in horror as he eats every single one.

Not having anything better to say, I will quote Rose... "Words fail me." ...that is, words that would be acceptable on this forum...
