Feeding a Piggie

I know they are terrible beggers.... but Hamish is acting like I STARVE him! I know his stomach is the size of his eye, is 6 bio gold pellets for breakfast too much? Because he can munch 3 at a time!!! And then how many bloodworms for dinner?

2 people have come over and said wow is that all you feed him?! And my dad just looked after him for the weekend while I was away & even he said I don't think he's impressed with how much you feed him.

I know they are greedy, I just want to check what is reasonable I don't think he is a baby because he has full fins - so what is acceptable for him?

He's making me feel guilty!!!

Lol. Sounds Like His Stomach Is Bigger Then His Eye To Me. Just Give Him A Bit More And See How He Does. He Should Be Able To Eat It All In 5-10 seconds.

Is that actual seconds or milli seconds?! Since I got him I have already been naughty & upped him from 4 pellets to 6 so he's doing a good job on me. I don't want to over feed him. Last night he was in a foul mood because I was late home, & therefore late with dinner. I've never seen a moody fish before!! haha

Lol. Its Actual Seconds Although if he is doing well on 6 pellets then i would keep him there or take him to 7 or maybe 8 at the maximum.

bettas are certainly the beggers of our fish world...among others, they are the worse as they look you right in the eyes LOL

id stick with the 4 max..and maybe 4-5 worms at night...even tho hes begging, id not go over that..bettas dont fit into that "feed how much they can eat within two mins" spectrum as they will eat and eat until they bloat or constipate themselves....goodluck!

That's too many for a little betta belly.
Bettas act like they've never eaten before and you could easily make him sick by giving him what he could eat in 5-10 seconds.

I can't even comment on this thread because we all know my Bettas are FAT! (including the babies) I'd be embarassed to admit how much mine get in a day....

You could try keeping him at the same and if you're home during the day giving him one or two extra as a treat. Between meals. (that's what ends up happening over here) *blush* Between mer and Coolie I don't know who begs more.

Hahahaha I'm out at work thru the day, I'll cut him down to 5 pellets.... they're really small!! I don't want to bloat him. He won't be impressed!!!

Is there something you could give him that would last longer?
Or maybe make like an ice cube with a few pellets frozen in it for him to try and get at through the day?
Don't know if the ice would cause a temp change or not though.

I don't kno.... if everyone else feeds twice a day then I'm sure he can cope, he's just a greedy guts! I think he just tried it on whenever he sees me cos he can smell I'm a soft touch - but I won't cave, I will not constipate my fish haha

MY mer is a bottemless pit. He also knows I'm a complete sucker to his every whim... same with Coolie.

There is another option, if you want to "indulge" your piggie-fish without the risk of bloating and constipation. Daphnia as a snack. It floats and has to be chased down, and it doesn't constipate...quite the opposite, it keeps things moving properly.

I know!!!! He did eat it the first day I bought him home but he turns his nose up at it now. I will try him again. He's pellet obsessed he can't get enough of them! He literally puts 3 in his mouth at a time then struggles to chew them all - and I was worried he'd not eat pellets!

I'd like to get him to eat a pea aswell but because they sink he ignores them. Maybe I can teach him to eat it off a spoon... altho I'm not having much luck in teaching him to do anything.... other than pretending he's starved when I have visitors!

lol cut smaller pieces like the size of a pellet..they will float...and as much as he likes to eat, hes very teachable if you hold back and show him the only way to get his food is off a spoon or your finger...

Haha hmm... think I'll keep my fingers away from his mouth all the same. He's decided he likes Daphnia today actually, seems he doesn't like it on weekdays only weekends...

Men!
