2 little questions...

Hi everyone,

2 little questions!

How long do the live plants last for on average? How often to you replace them?

And also - how fast can water change after you've tested it? Is it quite a slow thing or can it be quick? I'm just curious cos I did a test the other day & I'm away for 2 days this weekend so just wondered if I should do another beforehand, not sure if it would have been likely to have changed in just a few days?

Thx

The plants are going to depend on the species.Generally the plants last until they produce shoots/runners/bulbs to produce new plants, and rarely need to be replaced.

The water issue,is going to depend on the amount of wastes produced and the amount of filtration available.Heavily populated aquariums change faster than lightly populated aquariums. The amount of wastes produced, and the filters ability to reduce those wastes are going to determine the water change frequency, amount and intervals.

Not every aquarium is the same. Some change the water 2 times a week, some change it once a week, and any variation in between depending on waste and population levels.

How often do you test your water?

Generally I recommend to change the water depending on your nitrate readings. The higher the nitrates, the more frequent the changes need to be.Less nitrates means you change the water less, whatever is needed to keep the parameters stable.

Well I've only had my fish for a week & a half so I've only tested the water once so far. I think I will test it again then I can change the water before I go tonight if there are any rises...

He's in there on his own so hopefully he's not produced too much waste!
