| I need your help and support. My fish Buddha has been sick for 3 weeks. First 2 weeks he ate only once a day (usually 2 times). Last 7 days he has refused eating at all. He lived in a 6 gal cycled tank but I had to take him out and place in an 1 gal heated bowl. He is more comfortable without filter flow. When he was in his tank he spent all days sitting on the bottom of it. Now he tries to swim a little and doesn't stay on the bottom. I treated him with Parasite Clear. He didn't get any better. He is extremely thin (doesn't eat) but his belly gets bigger. I don't know if it is just an optical illusion or he has some kind of sickness. He loses his strength every minute. Most of the day he floats lifeless near the top of the bowl.
It will be very difficult for me to lose him. He is my first fish. He helped me to discover the great wold of betta and he brought me to this forum. Help, please. |

| Ara= why don't you try some of that 'clout' i am sure it will not hurt. it healed my Pretty Boy and you know how sick he was not eating for a period of 7-days and i gave him 2-treatments and he is fine now. eating, swimming and back to normal. Ara that clout was recommended to me and i think it is great it treats for a number of things. hugs for you and your baby and hope this helps you some and don't forget about miracles lol bella |

I'm sorry your little man isn't feeling well....What are you feeding him? Perhaps you could try some live or frozen bloodworms..I agree, some Bettas just don't do well with Filters...I have a coupld of boys like that...The only problem is when they are in a bowl without filtration it is very important to do water changes frequently....
Good luck and please keep us posted... |

| Believe me, I have tried all kind of food: different pellets, frozen bloodworms, dried bloodworms. Yesterday I purchased a new can of Hikari dried bloodworms. Still no luck. I can't find "clout" at Petco or Petsmart. Unfortunately, there are no other fish stores around. What else can I do to help Buddha? |

| Ara-this is pretty good too, it is called Lifeguard all in one treatment by Jungle and i have used it and it's also good i think it will help him as it treats a number of things lol 5-day treatment for a range of things see if you can get some of that. My boy wouldn't eat until he felt better so maybe if you can treat him and he feels better he will eat good luck Ara and i'll check back tomorrow. bella |

| Thank you, everybody, for your help!
Buddha is dying. I think he has a tumor. His belly is enormously big. I started him on maracyn 2 yesterday. But if he has a tumor nothing will help him. Poor guy is so tired and lifeless. He is a strong one but it seems like he is not going to make it ...
I added Buddha's pictures. May be somebody can help me to diagnose him. Last edited by ara; December 1st, 2008 at 04:06 PM.

| Have you tried the peas? If you already have, then I would agree about the tumor... |

| I had thought about the peas too. It's worth a try.
What size tank is he in and what's the water temp and readings? |

| That's how I noticed 3 weeks ago that Buddha was sick - he refused to eat a pea. I didn't have any problems or appetite issues with him before. Now he hasn't been eating for 8-9 days and has no interest in any food but his belly is very big (look at the pictures). I moved him to a 1 gal bowl because he was uncomfortable in his tank (water flow from the filter). T= 78F, change water every other day. |

| Any chance you can get the temp up closer to 80F? I know it's hard to do with a bowl. I've used a reptile heater pad when I had to use a bowl (2g I think) for a quick QT.
Have you tried food soaked in garlic juice? Some like the smell and will entice them to eat. |

| Good news - Buddha is still alive. Bad news - he hasn't gotten any better (still not eating) and developed a new problem. I am browsing through all fish forums trying to find what is going on with my guy. Something really terrible. He has very strange stuff coming from his body. It looks like guts. He now is swollen only on his right side and it seems he has a hole there. Something long, clear, stringy in this hole (first 3 pic). This morning he lost some of the stuff (you can see it on the heater, pic. 4). It is very scary. Desperately need your help! |

| | Master Of Fish Poo!
| Nematode Worms
The anus of the fish may protrude a little, and a thin threadlike worm will drift out of the anus. The fish becomes listless and bloated. It refuses to feed. Anti-worm medication developed for aquariums are usually affective against nematode worms. Nematodes are commonly present even in healthy fish, but can turn into a problem when the fish becomes weakened due to some other reason. Hole in the Head
As the name suggests, the fish develop small pits mainly in the region of the head. The holes are usually white in color and have a yellowish mucous trailing from them. The fish become listless, lose color and stop feeding. Hole in the head disease is cause by protozoa and is usually a secondary infection. Low levels of the protozoa that causes hole in the head disease live within the fish, and poor water quality and/or poor diet leads to the infection. The fish should be isolated in a quarantine aquarium and then treated. Direct injections or medicated food are some ways to treat the fish.
I've not seen this before, but the 2 conditions above are the closest I can think of to what your little guy is experiencing. |

| Thanks for your help!
Buddha lost a lot of his nasty stuff yesterday when I changed his water. The stuff doesn't look like worms. It is clear, long. It looks almost like a pea poo (when you feed a betta with a pea and he poops it). Now I can see that he has a perfectly round hole in his body (not in the head). Today he has more stuff hanging from the hole. His belly looks slightly swollen again. My main concern - he is not eating. He ate twice in 1 month (5 worms total). I don't know how he can survive so long... |

What a long fight and what a long road you and he traveled together. You did everything you could for him. I'm so sorry about your loss of Budda. |
