Betta Information:)

Hi There, Sorry If You ALready No This But Here Is Some betta Information:

The paradise fish and all fish in the betta genus are "anabantoids" from the family anabantidae. Anabanthoids are remarkable for having a specialised breathing apparatus called the "Labryinth organ". This organ is situated near the gills and allows the fish to obtain oxygen from the air when the fish gulps at the surface of the water. Having the labrynth organ allows bettas and paradise fish to survive in habitats that other fish species cant tolerate. In the wild, they can be found in rice paddies, drainage ditches, slow moving streams and puddles. The water in these areas can be muddy, very warm, and may contain rotting plant debris, all of which greatly depletes the available oxygen. When the oxygen levels reach a point where gills can no longer extract enough for survival, the fish can get supplemental oxygen from the air.

Betta Splendens, the ubiquitous Siamese Fightin Fish, is just one member of the Betta genus, which is closely related to the gourmis which also have the labryinth organ. All of the betta species are small, none are larger then 15cm in length and the genus contains many interesting and colourful species. Bettas are found throughout Asia, with the wild Betta Splendens being found in the Meckong River basin area, mainly in Thailand. The Siamese Fighting fish is well known for its behaviour of constructing a nest made of bubbles at the surface of the water in which its eggs are laid. This is done by the male, although females will often contribute to it during courtship. While many other Betta species also construct bubble-nests, thode that do not are mouth brooders. a behaviour which is usually found in species that come from fast flowing waters where bubble nests dont hold together well. Most people have the impression that all male fighting fish have long flowing tails and bright red or blue colouration. These fish, seen in almost every aqaurium store, are the result of hundreds of generations of line breeding to achieve spectacular colours and different styles of tail finnage. Even the females have become brighter in this process. The wild type Betta Splendens has a short tail and a duller greenish brown colouration, yet they are still attractive fish. Other Betta species are usually similar in shape to the wild type Betta Splendens but very in the colours and patterns on their bodies, with many bing just as eye catching as a line bred fighting fish. Some of these species such as B.smaragdina, B. pugnax and B. picta do become available very occasionaly though the aquarium trade or enthusiast organisations but unfortunately they reamin very hard to find in australia, such is the overwhelming domination of the line bred strains of Betta Spelndens. Siamese fighting fish, particularly those of line bred varieties do not have long life spans, usually only living for two or three years at best. Wild type fighting fish and other Betta species may live considerably longer than this. Common varieties of Bettas are available at your local fish store for between $5-10AUD, fancy and unusual varieties can retail upto $100AUD.
