Where to Buy?

I'd like to get a betta, but I have no idea where to buy one. I've never seen a remotely healthy looking one. I live in Seattle, which is a reasonably big city with lots of fish. The ones at Petco always look on the verge of death, but once you get them in a real tank, do they ever live? I've looked at my local fish store, which has really nice fish, but they never have more than three and usually sort of neglect them. My mom wont let me order fish online so thats out. Basically, I want to know if the sick looking ones ever do make it.
Thanks!

It depends. A lot of the cup babies perk up with a little TLC and a clean cycled tank. Some of them are too far gone when you pick them up...

Check into any local fish clubs or aquarium societies in your area. Fish you get locally from other hobbyists are usually very well taken care of and reasonably priced!

Now that's a good idea and your best bet if it will work out for you! If you could actually talk to the breeder, you'd have not only the advantage of better stock (if he/she is an excellent breeder), but you could find out the fish's parentage, age and even what he's been eating.

If you wind up buying a betta at a pet store, though, you could find out when their next incoming shipment is and be there that day to minimize the betta's time spent in a cup. Get one of the more active ones, the one that practically begs you to take him home. You'll know the look when you see it. Acting mad about his shipping ordeal and cup quarters would be a good hint that he's alert and healthy.

Quite a few people on this forum have bought "cup babies" that turned out to be healthy with proper equipment and TLC, but there are of course, bettas that just couldn't be saved.

The aquarium club thing is a good idea. I'll definetly look into it. Thanks! Oh, and by the way do bettas need real plants, or will plastic be okay?

Plastic plants can rip betta fins. The major stores usually carry silk (or synthetic material that looks like silk) plants that are softer on their fins.

Some of the smaller local pet stores can be a good place to look for bettas as well.

I've purchased all but one of my boys from Petco and with some TLC, they're pretty healthy. You just have to be choosy about what you buy. Look for signs of fin rot, listlessness.

Good luck on the hunt!

That is what I did. I made a looking for post on our local fish forum. Now I have made friends in the betta breeding world here in Canada.
I recommend trying http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/aucti...0=115=120&1&cg
you may find a breeder close to you. Just look thru the betta ads with the US flag on it and you should be able to find out where they are at.
Good luck, hope you find some one near you.
