is our female a male?

While I know female bettas can exibit male-associated behaviors like flaring and bubblenesting, our female Hera does so to a higher degree than our other female, to the same rate of the male. She has a much larger body than Artemis and vivid colors. She is as large as our full grown male, if not larger. And when we tried to do a female betta tank, she attacked the others

and yesterday we thought, you know.. there is such a thing as short-finned males... but google research has proved inconclusive.

it's just a cell phone picture... but tell me what you think... plakat male? She can flare more but that's all I got for the picture

her bubble nest is more impressive than billy's! and she's from a cup in a non-chain pet store... if that helps at all.

edit: dang! forgot to attach the picture

if you can see a white spot under her belly area...its a girlie..if not, she could be a he plakat..the pic doesnt show either way so maybe a lighter pic?

I have never seen any of my females make bubble nests. I didnt even know they do? I cant say for sure that your Hera is a plaket male, but it sure sounds like she is.

oh... she has a white spot... so I guess she's still she!

On another note.. she is completely unlike our other female... could someone identify her type? Or is her large size related to age and maturity? We have not had her for very long but she might be fairly aged.

edit: to get a brighter picture... I'll have to wait until about 10pm here to borrow my friend's real camera after work.

I have two fems and one is like her..and then I have a cambodian girlie...the blue is way bigger so it could be shes more aged or the cambodians stay small..what is your other girlie like?

Hera's got some gorgeous coloring
I don't really know a whole lot about the Girls, Babie is just that, a baby. I've had her for a few months now and she's still a tiny little thing. Both you're girls are gorgeous though. I keep wanting to get another little girl but don't have another tank for her
Good luck with her!

I would say from the pics, one is more mature than the other..hence the size difference and the aggression issues...the older girlie is a bully LOL ....goodluck with them!

The shape kind of says male to me, but I can see a bit of white on the belly, and the mouth is small, which makes me think female, so overall I"m leaning towards her being a girl. Hard to tell without a better pic, but if she is a girl, I'd say she's quite likely a plakat female.
Bettas, both males and females, keep growing slowly as they age. I've found my girls actually nearly always end up getting bigger than the boys, especially the halfmoon boys who put so much energy into growing and maintaining their fins instead of growing their bodies, so size isn't really any help in trying to sex them.
