Prevention is the key. But how to do it?

It seems that with so many of our fin babies have parasite issues would it be reasonable to just have a standing rule that every new fish gets a parasite tablet when they get home? You treat cattle and other pets and livestock with parasite medication yearly as a preventative measure why not the fish? Obviously the fish aren't being exposed to new and different things in they're tank everyday like our terrestrial pets so wouldn't at least that first dose make sense? Dose them in a QT tank and then when they're done move them (hopefully bug free) into their tank?
Maybe I'm just a bit off the wall, and maybe the meds we use on our fish aren't the same but what do you guys think?

I've never had a parasite issue with my fish. I'm also more of a holistic treatment kind of person.
But yes, a prophylactic dose of parasite meds could very well help deal with this kind of thing. The question is: is it worth the risk of the harm treatment could cause worth possibly avoiding the harm of the parasite? It's a question that everyone's got to answer for themselves. As I said, I prefer not using meds if I can avoid it, but others, who may be less worried about meds and more worried about parasites, may find such an idea excellent.

im with SDS ...thank goodness ive never had a parasite issue and god knows I have a ton of fish LOL ...it you continue to get fish with parasite's, maybe time to buy elsewhere...and deffinately a qt tank for the sickies ...I wouldnt medicat a fish "just because" as they are very sensitive to most meds even if they need it...

That is a good point. I'm a farm girl born and raised so I'm familiar with treating the 4 legged animals. I guess I'll need to research and learn a bit more about fish meds and the response's too them.
It's always a personal choice to treat or not I was just curious as to weather or not anyone on here knew anything about it.
