I'm hosting a Betta meeting!

I wanted to share my newest venture in my love for Bettas.....On Nov. 9th, I am hosting a meeting at my home for 10 Bettaholichs who show and breed....It is a yahoo group that I'm on.....There will be one Gentleman attending whom I can't wait to meet! He has bred Bettas for decades! We will be watching a new DVD on breeding and enjoying a potluck.....Members will bring any young fish along to trade/sell.....

I can't wait!!!!!!!!! And once again this meeting would never have happened without a link Allie had posted a while back from a breeder on Aquabid in my area....This breeder and I have become very good friends and get together a couple times a month...She just won Best in show in the new Breeders class with her male and female at the IBC show last month....

I'll post pictures for all to enjoy of some of our Southwest homebred babies!

Can I come too, huh, huh, huh!??! I'm not a breeder and I'm not about to bring Norbert to trade him!

I'll bring some Southwest Chili. I was lucky enough to get some Hatch chilis, roasting in a big fire-roaster a couple of weeks ago in the grocery store parking lot. It's only one time a year. I froze them. They add a wonderful flavor to my chili. I never knew dried beans are so much better than canned ones until I moved to the Southwest. Can I come if I promise to make my special chili?

Glad you are getting involved with the Betta people(and making friends) in your area...not many around here unfortunately. 3 of us that I know of...everyone else is spread throughout Canada. I have to be a paying member of the IBC before I can be a paying member of Betta Breeders Canada. So that's going to have to be a bday gift for me after xmas.
Good luck with your meeting.

One more fart joke and I'm bringing bean soup instead of chili! (Actually, the bean soup I make is as good as my chili, and they're both especially delicious with Hatch chilies. Neither have too many beans, so no excuses!

No feeding either dish to Karen's fish!

Hope you folks have a great time! If it weren't on the other side of the country you would have me to make some culinary delights, but maybe in a few years (when it could be a business expense.. )

I would love to be there but am afraid that I will need to be here with Mom and my two spoiled darlings. They are dealing me fits right now and are being so naughty that I wish I had some way of making them behave themselves like good little gentlemen.

Anyone want some naughty fish?? LOL

I found this article regarding the exixtance of Fish Farts on the web:

Quote: When you get a question like this you think, This is a golden opportunity to brighten up scientists' dull lives. I sent urgent inquiries all over the globe. Best response on the subject of whether fish fart: "They do if they're male."

Fish flatulence has not been a major focus of biological research, so the following is somewhat tentative. To some extent the answer depends on how you define "fart." Many fish have a swim bladder that they inflate or deflate as necessary to maintain buoyancy. Usually any expelled gas exits from the mouth and would properly be considered a burp. However, the sand tiger shark, Carcharias taurus, gulps air into its stomach at the surface, then discharges it out the back door to attain the desired depth. Surely this qualifies as flatulence in the common sense of the term.

But purists may object that this isn't true farting--that is, a by-product of digestion. We then get into a somewhat speculative realm. In theory any animal's metabolism produces carbon dioxide, while bacteria in the gut produce methane. Both must be purged lest the fish lose the ability to control its buoyancy. Carbon dioxide is typically eliminated via gas transport to the gills; methane has to escape some other way. However, actual sightings of farting fish are rare--and let's face it, underwater this isn't a phenomenon that could be easily concealed. Some experts say digestive gases are consolidated somehow with the fish's feces, which are packed into a gelatinous tube and then expelled. (Frequently the fish then eats this--not for nothing is the study of fish called ichthyology.) The point is, no farts.

Some fish observers claim they see a telltale bubble or two escape from the stern of a fish after it has gulped air at the surface (I have heard this said of tarpon). But again, this is not strictly a product of digestion. On the Web I have seen the claim that inasmuch as coral is made of calcium carbonate, which when combined with stomach acid produces carbon dioxide, coral-eating fish ought to produce farts in abundance. If true, it seems to me, the critters in the vicinity of a typical coral reef should emit forests of bubbles unequaled since the days of Lawrence Welk--not the impression one usually gets. Then again, few visit reefs specifically for the purpose of detecting fish farts. In short, Alan, much research remains to be done. Maybe you could organize an expedition and let us know.
