| Meet FishPotato! Okay, I'm kidding about the name. KIDDING! Actually, his name is "Brewster the Rooster." Selected and named by Husband. Probably NOT what I would have chosen, but my life is easier when Husband is happy.
Thanks to his movement and the intense glare off the acrylic tank, these aren't the best pictures. However, I know how you guys are and I will be in big trouble if I don't post new fish pics within 24 hours of acquiring said new fish.
Although he is clearly not a dragon, he seems to have a dragon personality. He's a BRAT! Nothing shy about this guy! He was flaring and showing off in his little cup at the LFS. When we floated the cup in the tank, he was thrashing around the whole time. He couldn't wait to get into all that water! He has explored every inch of the Mini Bow and claimed it as his own.
Anyway, enjoy the photos. I will try to get more tonight when the glare won't be so bad. Last edited by MousePotato; October 12th, 2008 at 04:36 PM.

| And here is the whole tank. He's got a sort of "minimalist-zen" thing going on right now, but Mom has big plans! There is a piece of driftwood soaking in the kitchen and I intend to make this a planted tank. |

We'll see if they grow. If so, he'll have some kind of onion, a waterlily and a few Aponogetons. Quote:

Brewster the Rooster is really pretty. Congratulations on bringing him home and also on your husband getting bitten by the "bug." You two should have a lot of fun pampering Brewster together. |

| Thanks, everyone.
GKat, it's a five gallon Mini Bow. Close.
Pam, I thought of your Norbert and your description of his first night while I was dealing with this little punk. He's the same way. "Lemme OUT! That's MY house! What's a guy gotta do to get a bloodworm around here?" I hear about bettas being shy and intimidated by so much room all the time. Not this guy! He's all over the place. Never stops moving.
He seems to have adjusted in no time. And, yes, leave it to my beer-drinking husband to name him "Brewster!" I guess if I had named him, he might be "Mondavi." |

| Okay, here is a slightly better picture. Man, whoever said bettas are slow swimmers never tried to photograph one!
He's everywhere! Swimming through the roots of the anubias. Playing in the bubbles. Biting the filter. Such a busy boy! |

Busy is, indeed, a wonderful thing to see. I rarely read a post that begins with "my betta is so very active" and ends with "I'm really worried he might be sick!" Quote:

Val | Thanks. I think he's lovely and so fiesty! His light is off now, but he's still cruising around behind the heater, under the filter (whoops - suction!), checking out the bit of plastic floating plant I added to help the cycle. I think he really likes that. I've caught him resting on it like a little flotation device. I may just leave it in for his convenience at night.
I agree with your recipe for marital bliss! Actually, I had my eye on a different betta, but Husband liked this one and I figured it wasn't that important. At least he came on board with getting one (got a fin in the door for others!). I wonder how many years we have to be married before he learns not to argue with me..? He didn't want fish - now he loves them. He didn't want another puppy after Emma died - Viviane is his bosom buddy. He didn't like the paint I chose for the master bathroom, but loved the end result. I could go on and on!
Oh, I almost forgot! He was looking at the Mini Bow and musing that it was small enough for his hotel room or his office. I definitely see more bettas in our future! |

| Ahhh yes, us girls are schemers and canivores!!!!
When God made her plan for us..She made a good one.. .
Now you have to tell him what a good idea he had regarding the mini bow...........
I think the first days with a feisty betta are so fun, I can't stop watching!
My husband thinks I am a complete loony, but I have overheard him in a fish store, telling the owner they should not keep the bettas in little cups, they need filters, etc, etc!!!!! Kinda cute. I am soooooo proud!!

| I completely agree! I don't want to go to work tomorrow because I want to watch him. Now I can't stop talking about him and, with Husband out of town, you guys are my only human company, so I won't stop posting!
You should be very proud of your influence on your husband. I haven't quite gotten mine to that point, but we're getting there. I can hardly believe how Steve has come along on this. He wants me to email him pictures so he can get his "fish fix." I know he thinks I'm a little loony, but he'll never say it. He's a complete whack-job himself! He talks and walks in his sleep and people constantly ask me if he's on drugs (absolutely NOT!) because he's just really hyper and goofy. He really can't criticize me after some of the stuff I've witnessed. One morning I woke up to find a flathead screwdriver with toothpaste on the blade on his side of the vanity! |

Minx, there are these new tiny heaters from Tetra and you don't even have to set them. I was pretty skeptical at first but I bought one and tested it for a couple days in an empty tank and it kept my water about 78 the whole time. I found it at WalMart (hate that store for the people, love it for the prices) and they're in two of my three betta tanks now... |

| You are correct, ShaynaB! It is, in fact, a Tetra Whisper heater for tanks from 2-10 gallons. It is preset for 78 degrees and so far, so good. I have notoriously bad luck with heaters, so I figured it can't be any worse than the rest I've tried. I did have to replace the lightbulb in the Mini Bow, though. It got WAY too hot!
I had to go back to Petco today for the new bulb and they had the cutest little silvery crowntails that looked almost like dragons... I gotta stay out of that place! |

| I put a compact fluorescent bulb into my minibows. I love the way the light looks versus the incandescent and it doesn't get as hot either!
I'm really loving the little heaters. I don't have to futz with the settings! |

| That's the bulb I got, too. It's a Coralife compact flourescent, ten watt with actinic.
Oh, I can now emphathize with Norbert's moth story! There is a fly buzzing around Brewster's tank and ohhhhhh how he wants it! I wouldn't dare, though. Too many pesticides around here! |
