Too funny..

Found this on yahoo anwers..

The Question: Can I cycle my fish tank with a betta fish in it?
I am going to be getting a betta fish in a week. I have a 5 gallon and 2 gallon fish tank. Is it ok to leave the betta fish in the tank while its cycling? Would it be ok to put the fish in my 2 gallon tank untill the 5 gallon tank is done cycling?

One of the replies: It's not "Betta" it's "Better". First peace of advise - use spell check!!
You say that you are going to get a better fish but you don't specify what sort of fish you currently have.

lol..I also like how he tells her to spell check when he spelled "piece" incorrectly.

This is too funny!!!! He also spelled advice wrong!!! problem with using spell check is that all of those words ARE words -- they may be the wrong words to use at the time but they are words so spell check won't flag them!

Well I'm sure that all of us betta mommies can agree that bettas are the better fish

That's pretty funny I guess not every place can be as helpful as fishlore.

That's just wrong. I found the question, and the answers you got, almost across the board, are idiotic. One guy (claiming to be a breeder), says you should just use a small vase, another says that putting old tank water in will cycle the tank.
And these are the people that others are turning to for answers.

What is wrong with using old water to cycle a tank? There would be alot of good seed bacteria in the water, there are also nutrients to feed that bacteria and if you also used plants with old water you would be even better off. I often start new tanks with old water, some plants and an old filter pad to get it started right. Then do a 50 or 75% water change and I'm good to go in a few days instead of weeks. I know it works, the tests prove it.

It's the plants and filter pad that are carrying the bacteria (which generally aren't free-floating. They colonize solid surfaces). The water carries a minimal amount of the nitrifying bacteria and may speed the process by a couple of days, when moving solid bits (the more surface area, the better), will speed it by weeks, down to the point that the tank is more or less instantly cycled.

SDS is right about the bacteria. It colonizes on surfaces so while there may be a tiny amount in the water on it's way to a surface, almost all bacteria is on surfaces. Using old water also moves waste and other materials that could easily overwhelm the tiny amount of bacteria.
