What's happening

I have a question. One of my two new half moon bettas developed fin rot about two months ago. The tail became pretty small so I treated the fish with fin rot medication. The tail stoped getting smaller that same week, but now for two months the tail has stayed the same size and will not grow back. What is wrong why will the tail not grow back?

In my experience, tails take a long time to grow back. I have a Peacock who had chunks missing from his tail when I got him. It's been about two months and I'm just now starting to see visible signs of regrowth. Maybe he just needs more time.

My betta used to live in horrible conditions before I knew any better. He's been in pristine conditions for at least 2 months now, and his tail is still rather ragged. I think it just sometimes takes a while to grow back.

The thing is betta fish grow their tails back very fast especially males due to their aggresive behavior. Also the tail has not shown any improvement in two months. It just says the same size.

Halfmoons have a lot of finnage, so it takes quite a lot of energy for them to grow it back. How often/what are you feeding? It's possible if he's not getting enough nutrition that might be slowing the growth. What are your water parameters? They're pretty tolerant, but if the pH/hardness are way outside the usual range that might be hampering growth as well.
Any chance he's tail biting? A few of my males that have suffered tail damage seemed to rather like their extra freedom to swim and took to keeping them trimmed... that's another possibility... (possibly the likeliest...)

I agree with Pandora..It sounds like he is trimming his tail...My boy Patron has a very long heavy finnage...I have been battling this since day 1...I finally caught him chewing his tail off and he keeps it short on his own..If it is true fin rot I believe all the feathering would be affected...

P.S. a photo will help determine what is going on..

Do you have: frozen hikari bloodworms, Vita-Chem, Fish Protector, Garlic Guard? Bloodworms for his diet and those 3 daily promote faster fin regrowth.

Yes, I have all of this stuff except the garlic gaurd. What is it anyways? My betta is fed heavily with blood worms every single day and the water conditions are pretty good. I do think it really was fin rot because when I started treating it with the medication the fin stoped shrinking then I did not treat the fish for about two weeks and it began getting smaller again.

I found the vita chem helped speed the tail growth.

Garlic Guard is a natural immune system boost that can help prevent infection, useful when there's fin damage.
