He is swimming a little more now than he was.

I'm glad to hear that. Is he eating? Pooing?

I tried to take a picture of him and he flared at me, so I am taking that as a good sign. He ate a piece of freezedried bloodworm. I was in class from 7-9:30 (6:30-10:00 if you count driving) so I am unsure if he pooed during that time, but he has not since I got home)

Swimming a bit and eating is a good thing.

Does he seem bloated?

Other than his sudden urge to lay down more often than normal, he looks completely normal.

Is it possible that he is just becoming an old man? Do bettas lay down more when they get older?

Well, like anything, as they get old they're not as active. How old is he?

I bought him a year ago, and since the stores around here sell them anywhere between 6 months and a year i'm guessing he is between 1 1/2 and 2 years old... is that old for a betta?

That must have been so difficult giving up your mare and horseback-riding. Oh dear!!!!

In reference to a later post of yours, you're FAR from an idiot! None of us can know everything about bettas and aquarium equipment, no matter how experienced we are, and only idiots don't bother to learn more.

I think you're right to do the daily water changes until you know what's really going on in the tank. I'd err on the side of disturbing him rather than unnecessary water changes for now, as I suspect the tank is not fully cycled. Good for you in ordering the test kit!

What is it, anyway, about betta lovers and horses and chihuahuas? Even though you've never indicated you have a chihuahua, there's probably one in your future. Several of us on this board are crazy about bettas, horses and chi's. There's some sort of strange connection!

I currently have a yellow lab and a red golden retriever. I was thinking about getting a small lap dog in the future... the yellow lab "thinks" she is a lap dog, but she weighs about 60 pounds, so when she jumps on me I really feel it!

I've read thier lifespan is anywhere from 2-5 years, depending on their living conditions.

I would get some Parasite Clear if you don't have a box of it in your fish cabinet, just in case. If it's possible, I'd also recommend Prime for water conditioner and soaking the bloodworms in garlic guard (or some removed tank water) before feeding to him.

Hughie started laying down a lot again. Since there is no visible sign of a problem and his water is within parameters, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5, pH 7.4, I began to think maybe it was an internal parasite like CO suggested. I picked up the parasite clear this afternoon and put it into the tank (dissolved the tablet in a cup of water and poured 1/4 of the water in his tank).

Lets hope it works.

Does anyone know how long it should be before I know if it is working or not? Also, how long until I put a cartridge with carbon in to the filter to remove the medicine?

Owch. I've done that off of my gang a few times. Worst I've got out of it so far is a concussion. (Helmets? Who needs Helmets? lol)

I've noticed my boy's been laying down a lot lately as well. Hope you can figure out what's wrong with yours. Good luck.
