How much food do I give to my betta?

Do I feed Wiggles twice a day? How much one or two pellets / worms?

We've been feeding him every other day one / two pellets in the a.m. and the same in the p.m. Do you think he's underfed?

He gets soooo excited when he sees us. Thanks.

I feed mine 4-5 pellets in the morning and the same at night, a few days a week I sub the night pellets for blood worms.
I also feel her tiny bits of thawed frozen shelled pea once a week as a treat, not in place of a meal, to prevent constipation.

Here's Rose's thread on betta care, it's a terrific resourse.

Everyone has their own way of feeding Bettas but here's mine....Just remember that all my boys are HUGE lol....

Bloodworms in the AM
brine shrimp/Peas at lunch
5 Hakari pellets at dinner
And a big kiss before bed works wonders!

Twice a day, one or two pellets is probably an excellent amount.
Don't forget a pea every once in awhile, or you can get freeze-dried daphnia.

Lucy / martinismommy,

Wiggles is thankful to you that his food is being increased. He'll think he's at a buffet seeing that he will now be feed twice daily instead of every other day.

we feed our six bettas 4 pellets in the morning and 4 bloodworms at night. on sundays, we go ITALIAN style and soak one meal in garlic guard.
we sub pea bits for a meal if they start looking a bit chunky so they don't get constipated.

Good job on caring for Wiggles!!!

MinxMermaid - I love the ITALIAN idea! That's so cool. I had to look at your aquarium info when you said you had six bettas. That's a lot of tanks. It must take you a long time to clean them all. I have Wiggles to the left of my by my pc on the kitchen counter and he's such good company. I look at him and he looks at me and does his wiggle dance. Soooo cute!

Thank you all for your input. Wiggles is luving you all.

Yes Minx, that must be a lot of work for you!

Actually, Minx has stated a few times that her husband does all the tank cleaning. Ah the advantages of being an attractive female.

I feed 2-4 (really small) tropical fish flakes in the morning (switching to Bio-Gold pellets on the recommendation of pretty much everyone here), and 3-5 blood worms at night. The blood worms get soaked in garlic juice and water once a week, they get a small chunk of pea once a week, and I feed them tiny pieces of Nori (organic seaweed, like for sushi) 2-4 times a month as well for some nice pure veggie nutrients. Once in a blue moon they get some brine shrimp, too. Yes... they are spoiled. They're all getting big and vibrant, and I blame it mostly on their diet.

I kind of rotate between foods... though it's often pellets in the morning and frozen in the evening. Pellets I use around 3 per feeding of HBH betta bites, Hikari BioGold, Omega One betta pellets, or New Life Spectrum baby cichlid pellets, or 6-10 pellets of Hikari micro wafers (usually substitute for whatever pellet if the fish is small, though the big guys get them occasionally too!). Frozen foods are mysis shrimp, bloodworms, or spirulina enriched brine shrimp (though I try different things from time to time). If I'm going to be breeding a particular betta in the near future they get double rations, so are extra happy!

Wow - what a variety of foods and ways to feed your bettas. I'm glad I asked the question because Wiggles was getting 2 to 3 pellets once a day every couple of days. Hubby was doing the feeding based on his sister's recommendation. So I think I was starving the poor little guy - but no more!

JDHEF - Thanks for the input on Minx's tanks. Now that I've gotten the fish bug again, I know I'll be the ONLY one taking care of the tanks.

Devon - I suspect that my guy will now flourish now that he's getting food!

Pandora - I'm feeding the Hikari pellets along with blood worms for now. However, I plan to keep a copy of this thread so I can investigate further all the other options.

What a remarkable difference in Wiggles since moving into the 10 gallon. His fins are looking better now that I'm treatinghim with Triple Sulfa.

Thanks again everyone.
